CareerLink to host job fair
LEWISTOWN -- CareerLink will host a multi-employer job fair from 1-3 p.m. Thursday, May 9. The event will take place at the Juniata Valley YMCA, 105 1st Ave, Burnham. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. for veterans.
More than 30 employers representing diverse industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, financial, transportation and construction are expected to participate.
Attendees will have access to a wide range of full-time and part-time job opportunities.
Admission will be free. No appointments are necessary to attend and walk-ins are welcome.
Kish Historical Society to meet
BELLEVILLE -- The Annual Meeting of the Kishacoquillas Valley Historical Society will be held at 6:30 p.m. May 6, at the Belleville Activity Center, N. Penn Street. The program features speaker Robert Conrad. Bob and his wife, Joan. The couple have developed a passion for antiques that started in the 1970s.
For the past 23 years they have been full time antiques dealers. His program will be about the lesser-known salt box creator, "Particular" Rufus Peachey. The Valley has become known for Plank salt boxes, but the creations of Rufus Peachey are equally interesting. Conrad will discuss the Peachey salt boxes and how they differ from the more famous Plank boxes and the story of their creator. The business meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the program follows at 7 p.m.
Veteran town hall held at medical center
ALTOONA -- James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center will host a veteran town hall on April 25. The event is to inform veterans about the expansion of the Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxins (PACT) Act of 2022 and increase knowledge of services offered at our Medical Center and Community Based Outpatient Clinics.
The open house takes place between noon and 3 p.m. Veteran Service Officers, representatives from the National Cemetery Administration and multiple services will be on hand throughout the main floor of the medical center talking with Veterans about what they offer or starting a veteran's journey into VA Healthcare.
Starting at 1 p.m. in the 2nd floor mini auditorium, VA leadership will present information about the direction of the VA Medical Center and a question and answer session follows. Topics include, Enrollment and Eligibility, New PACT Act Eligibility, Suicide Prevention and Women's Health.
Veterans not enrolled in VA Healthcare should bring their DD214 to speak with an enrollment and eligibility team and get the process started.
Norfolk Southern to close rail crossing
LOCK HAVEN -- The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that Norfolk Southern will close a railroad crossing along Farrandsville (Road Route 1001) in Colebrook Township, Clinton County, today. The crossing is located at the curve in Farrandsville and will be closed for approximately six hours while Norfolk Southern makes emergency repairs to the crossing.
Crews will wait until all buses have completed their runs before closing the crossing and reopen the road prior to dismissal.
Local law enforcement and emergency services have been notified of the closure and have contingency plans in place.
Civil War group to host speaker
STATE COLLEGE -- The Central PA Civil War Round Table will meet on Tuesday, May 7, at the PA Military Museum auditorium, 51 Boal Avenue, in Boalsburg beginning at 7 p.m.
The featured speaker will be Dr. Chris Mackowski who will speak on "Hell Itself -- The Battle of the Wilderness."
The Battle of the Wilderness was fought on May 5-7, 1864, during the American Civil War. It was the first battle of Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant's 1864 Virginia Overland Campaign against CSA General Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia.
Chris Mackowski is the editor of the award-winning "Emerging Civil War" series, and author, co-author, or editor of more than twenty-five books. Chris is a writing professor and associate dean at the Jandoli School of Communication at St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, NY. He is an historian and battle field guide for the National Park Service at Fredericksburg, VA, where he gives tours of the Battle of the Wilderness.
One hundred sixty years ago, events in the United States were turbulent, uncertain, nationalistic, and full of terror.
