Inmate death reported at SCI
HUNTINGDON -- An inmate at State Correctional Institution at Smithfield was found unresponsive in his cell on March 31, 2024.
Chad Wakefield, superintendent of SCI at Smithfield reported, 38-year-old Jeffrey Bell Jr. was transported to Penn Highlands Hospital after prison staff and medical personnel responded and provided life-saving measures until EMS arrived.
Bell was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Bell was serving a 9-month-to-2-year sentence for obstructing administration of law/government on a Clearfield County conviction. The report says he had been at SCI since Oct. 10, 2023.
The report says the Pennsylvania State police will conduct an investigation. The official cause of death will be determined by the Huntingdon County coroner's office.
The deceased's next-of-kin has been notified.
