LEWISTOWN - From traditional fishing to fly fishing, local anglers know waterways in the Juniata Valley provide an ideal setting for that next fishing trip.
After all, the Juniata River watershed is comprised of more than 6,500 miles of streams.
So, when officials from the Mid-Atlantic Kayak Bass Fishing Series announced locations for the 2024 tournament schedule, it wasn't much of a surprise that the Juniata Valley was front and center. The fishing series was scheduled to make a stop on Saturday as anglers will be fishing from McVeytown to Amity Hall.
Mother Nature had other ideas; however, as this week's torrential rainfall, which caused massive flooding throughout the Juniata Valley, forced tournament officials to cancel the fishing event. Water levels for the river were also deemed unsafe for anglers.
"We're working to reschedule," Mid-Atlantic Kayak Bass Fishing Series Tournament Director Aaron Fetterman said. "Our plan is to come back to the Juniata Valley, but we're still working through those details."
This would have marked the first time for the fishing series to come to the Juniata Valley.
The rest of the tournament schedule remains intact. The series opener now moves to Potomac River on April 20-21. In May, the series heads to Conowingo on May 4, Upper Bay on May 5 and the Delaware Open on May 15.
There are a pair of stops at the Susquehanna River on July 27 and July 28. The Tournament of Champions closes out the schedule on Oct. 5.
"We were going to try to open up some of the smaller lakes at Bald Eagle State Park or up at Raystown Lake, but the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers closed all the boat ramps at Raystown," Fetterman added. "And we figured the state parks would be next, so we decided to cancel."
