MIFFLINTOWN -- Much like marveling at a vibrant tapestry, Juniata High School art education teacher Rachel Shepler is captivated by countless young artists who enrich their lives with their creativity, passion and dedication to the arts.
Savanna Eby is the latest example. Shepler describes Eby, a senior and home-schooled student who attends art and history classes at the high school, as a "versatile artist with a passion for both visual arts and performing."
Known for her hard work and dedicated flair, Eby recently entered her artwork, a piece titled "Wings of Liberty," into the prestigious Congressional Art Competition, representing the rich talent pool within the Juniata Valley community.
It didn't take long for Eby's talent to shine brightly.
Eby's journey started when Shepler received a letter from Rep. John Joyce (R-13th District) about an art competition. Impressed with what Shepler called "exceptional talent at watercolors and her adeptness at tackling challenges," she encouraged Eby to embark on this endeavor.
Eby was more than happy to accept the task. Driven by her passion and encouraged by her teacher, Eby started working on the project. Shepler gave students a lot of artistic freedom.
Eby's artist statement read: "I drew the flag and eagle with pencil then I used watercolor to paint this one. Painting the flag was my favorite part. I painted the eagle to represent our strength as American citizens and the flag as a reminder of our freedom."
The Congressional Art Competition provides a valuable platform for high school students in the 13th Congressional District to showcase their artistic prowess.
Pennsylvania's 13th Congressional District comprises Juniata, Mifflin, Huntingdon and Perry Counties, along with Adams, Franklin, Fulton, Bedford, Cambria, Blair and the western edge of Cumberland County and the northwest corner of Somerset County.
Eby's decision to participate underscores her commitment to honing her craft and sharing her unique perspective with a wider audience, Shepler explained.
One outstanding artwork from the 13th District will be selected to hang in the Cannon Tunnel in the United States Capitol for one year, as part of the 2023 Congressional Art Competition exhibition.
The final decision regarding the suitability of all artwork for the exhibition will be made by a panel chaired by the architect of the Capitol, ensuring adherence to the policy of the House Office Building Commission.
"With her boundless creativity and drive, Savanna Eby embodies the spirit of artistic exploration and innovation," Shepler added. "Her multidisciplinary approach to artistry serves as an inspiration to her peers and a testament to the transformative power of artistic expression."
Shepler said Eby's journey into the realm of art is a testament to her dedication to her craft and innate talent. In Eby's painting class at JHS, her primary focus in the visual arts lies in her drawings and paintings with acrylics and watercolors.
Eby's passion also extends beyond the canvas. She is an accomplished dancer, gracing the stage as a member of the Margaret McCann School of Dance. Eby also dedicates her time by helping younger students at the school of dance, sharing her love of moment and expression with others.
As the Congressional Art Competition unfolds, all eyes are on Eby and her art. "Her presence in the competition not only highlights her individual talent but also serves as a reminder of the vibrant artistic community that thrives within our district," Shepler said.
