Officials talk graduation, increase in pay for temporary job openings

LEWISTOWN -- Mifflin County School District's Board of Directors announced their official plans for the 2024 Mifflin County High School graduation and discussed a pay increase for temporary positions in the district along with other business.
Pending no more cancellations, graduation will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2024, on Mitchell Field.
In the event of inclement weather, graduation day will be rescheduled for Thursday, June 6, 2024, at the same time and location. Any further cancellations will result in an indoors ceremony at 6 p.m. in the Mifflin County High School gymnasium. All senior parents will be notified via SKYLERT of any changes related to the scheduled commencement Wednesday, June 5, 2024, or any changes thereafter.
Directors discussed and shortly disagreed upon an increased pay rate for Technology Interns to $15 an hour effective May 1, 2024. They held their first roll call vote on the item which resulted in a 4-4 tie. Terry Styers was absent from the board. Mark Baker, Rose Salvo, Paula Dickson and John Knepp voted against the item.
Intern, although a common term, can be misconstrued as someone who is working without pay to earn college credits. However, Mifflin County School District Technology interns are high school and college graduates who earn pay.
Some school board directors disagreed with this item because not all Mifflin County School District staff is receiving more than $15.
The original hourly wage for this position was $10. Unfortunately, the district has not found individuals to work for that amount, but they hope the pay increase will expedite the hiring process to fill at least two more positions for this summer.
Following the directors' tied vote and an executive session, they unanimously agreed to the pay increase in a roll call vote.
During their final discussion regarding the pay increase, directors also decided to change the proposed job title to Temporary Summer Technology Help to prevent further confusion.
In other news, School Board Director Diane Stewart shared her excitement for the students of Lewistown Elementary School who had a PBIS Celebration and LES Talent Show Thursday, hosted by the teachers.
This celebration regarded students receiving more than 70,000 paw tickets this year. The number holds significance because it signifies that LES students received praise more than 70,000 times this year for their achievements. Stewart thanks the staff as well as the students for this amazing achievement.

Approved of the Treasurer's Report for the month ended Feb. 29, 2024.
Approved of the Cafeteria Financial Report for February 2024.
Approved of paying the Cafeteria Bills for February 2024.
Approved Dennis Devita driving for Fisher Bros. bus company starting March 11. 2024.
Approved the Mifflin County High School marching band spring trip to Annapolis, Maryland and Washington, D.C. on Saturday, April 13, 2024 and Sunday, April 14, 2024.
Approved of a foreign exchange student for the 2024-2025 school year at the Mifflin County High School by the name of Yuzaka Hirosawa from Japan sponsored by the Youth For Understanding, Intercultural Exchange Programs.
Approved of a pay increase for technology interns of $15 an hour effective May 1, 2024.
Approved designating Thomas White Jr., Director of Buildings and Grounds as the integrated pest management coordinator for the district per policy 716.
Approved the use of the auditorium for the Hope Collective to hold a worship service prior to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2024 at Mifflin County High School.
Approved of the comprehensive pan and all of the supporting documents.
Approved the Tuscarora Intermediate unit budget in the amount of $3,761,717 for the fiscal year of July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025.
Approved to adopt a resolution that was presented during last weeks meeting, authorizing and directing, among other things, School District's Administration, School District Solicitor and the School District's financing team to take preparatory action required in order for the School District to undertake the refinancing of certain outstanding indebtedness of the School District.
Approved sponsorship and naming rights agreements between First Quality Retail Services, LLC and the Mifflin County School District as related to the Multi-Sports Stadium Project.
