MIFFLINTOWN -- It's almost time for the Juniata High School cheerleaders to come hopping down the bunny trail to deliver their eggs-citing treats.
Marisa Boyer, Juniata's head cheerleading coach, is hoping --not hopping -- for a good response from the community this year for the Third Annual Egg My Yard fundraiser.
After selling nearly 2,000 eggs in 2022, Boyer wasn't as egg-static over the numbers from last year's Easter orders. So far, they have 15 orders this year. The deadline is Sunday, March 24.
"We unfortunately didn't do nearly as many houses last year as we did our first year," Boyer said.
A happy Easter would mean lots of orders and a better egg-sperience this year, for peep's sake.
But seriously, the Indians cheerleaders are selling plastic eggs, which they fill with candy, stickers and small toys. Residents, within a 30-minute radius of the high school, can purchase up to 70 eggs and have the cheerleaders hide them in their yards - just in time for Easter on Sunday, March 31. Eggs will be delivered on Friday, March 29 or Saturday, March 30.
That might sound eggs-hausting, but Boyer said the experience is truly rewarding.
"It's good team bonding (exercise)," Boyer said. "The girls haven't seen each other since the basketball season ended."
The eggs can also be dropped off for residents to hide on their own. "It is pretty split between hidden and just dropped off actually," she added.
Prices range from $15 to $50, with a minimum order of 15 eggs.
Initially, Boyer got the idea for the fundraiser from reading a social media post from another cheerleading squad. "One coach posted it was really successful in their area," she explained. "I thought it sounded kind of silly, but it went way better than everyone expected."
Anyone with an allergy can request the cheerleaders make a special order - without that ingredient. They also can fill them with dog treats, too, for pets.
So much for putting all of her eggs in one basket.
"We're starting to advertise earlier than last year," Boyer said.
Proceeds benefit the Juniata cheerleading squads - the football cheerleaders in the fall, which is a co-op with East Juniata, and the basketball cheerleaders in the winter.
"It pays for our end-of-season banquet cost, pre-game meals, practice space and it also gives us the ability to buy extra things for the girls to eliminate the costs for parents, such as team shirts, team water bottles, etc.," Boyer said.
