MIFFLINTOWN -- Juniata Commissioners commemorate the 56th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act, issuing a proclamation and declaring the month of April 2024 as Fair Housing Month during their weekly meeting.
The fair housing act makes it illegal for landlords and real estate companies as well as other entities, such as municipalities, banks or other lending institutions and homeowners insurance companies who refuse to give housing to persons because of race, religion, sex, national origin, familial status, or disability.
Commissioners also addressed the importance that April is also Pennsylvania Safe Digging Month which serves as a reminder for all excavators and homeowners to contact 8-1-1 at least three business days before you dig, so that the approximate location of underground utility lines can be identified and marked by facility owners. The contact 8-1-1 before you dig process helps to prevent injuries, property damage, and inconvenient utility outages.
In other news, commissioners took action on the following items:
Adopted a resolution authorizing the opening of an account with Kish Bank for the County Reassessment Project.;
Approved payment of a Juniata County Hazardous Materials check in the amount of $180 for Bucks County Community College Educational;
Approved the hiring of Stanley J. Ely, III as a casual, part-time employee within the Commissioner's Office to provide security services as needed at an hourly wage of $21.76 effective March 26. Mr. Ely has full firearms certification status. This position is classified at less than 1,000 hours per year and is not eligible for benefits nor is it part of the County's Retirement Fund as outlined in the Juniata County Employees Retirement System Summary Plan.
