LEWISTOWN -- The 14th Annual Walk for Warmth will give participants a sense of what it's like to be without heat for a time.
They will join others to walk in frigid temperatures on Saturday.
Registration begins at
9:30 a.m. and opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m.
"By doing this event, we hope the community can see what some have to deal with," said Colette Hartzler, executive director of the United Way of Mifflin-Juniata, which organizes the annual event.
Hartzler said she hopes to raise about $3,000 this year -- adding that last year's event brought about $2,800.
"I was pleasantly surprised by the turnout last year," said Hartzler, executive director for the United Way of Mifflin-Juniata. "We had around 30 walkers."
Participants are asked to register at the Theatre-in-the-Park in Kish Park. From there they will receive a name tag and they may walk as many laps as they wish.
Proceeds from the Walk for Warmth support the local Mifflin-Juniata Energy Bank. The Mifflin-Juniata Energy Bank provides heating assistance to families who have been denied Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program benefits due to income ineligibility. Veterans and residents age 60 or older are assisted even if they have received LIHEAP benefits.
This event is sponsored by energy providers, with hot chocolate donated by Dunkin Donuts and MERF Radio will be on deck offering up some of those good tunes to keep the walkers warm and entertained.
