LEWISTOWN -- A 46-year-old man was arrested Sunday after police said he attempted to steal an emergency vehicle.
Jeremy Lynn Brumbaugh, of Lewistown, was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Kent Smith Sunday on charges of disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.
According to the Affidavit of Probable Cause, Mifflin County Regional Police were called to the Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital at about
4:15 a.m. Sunday morning where emergency responders reported they were trying to restrain Brumbaugh -- who they said was attempting to steal an ambulance.
The report states that Brumbaugh had been transported by FAME EMS ambulance earlier for anxiety related to possibly ingestion of an unknown substance.
Police said Brumbaugh reported that he had ingested a liquid from a Gatorade bottle prior to the onset of the heightened anxiety, but once at the hospital, refused evaluation and treatment.
Police said Brumbaugh was instructed to leave the hospital, but due to the cold temperature, was allowed to wait in the waiting room for a ride.
After a significant amount of time at the facility, police said Brumbaugh was seen attempting to access other areas of the hospital and was instructed to leave.
At that time, police said Brumbaugh was seen exiting the admissions area through the main sliding door and immediately running toward a parked, unattended FAME EMS ambulance that was just outside the doors and grabbed the rear doors in an attempt to access the patient care area of the vehicle.
When asked, Brumbaugh stated that he attempted to get into the ambulance because emergency responders were "supposed to take me back (to the Mifflin County Shelter)."
Police said Brumbaugh had some minor abrasions and lacerations on his arms and elbows due to an encounter with the security officer in the ambulance.
Police said Brumbaugh was highly anxious, agitated and unable to follow simple directions, consistent with being under the influence of a stimulant substance.
The report states that Brumbaugh stated he believed someone "spiked" his chewing tobacco with "something like methamphetamines."
He was treated at the hospital for his lacerations, then was arrested.
Brumbaugh was held on $1,000 unsecured bail. He is awaiting a preliminary hearing set for 9 a.m. Feb. 28.
