Mini-THON back to raise $30K for cancer research

LEWISTOWN -- Perhaps one of the biggest events of Mifflin County High School's school year is just around the corner, but it's not too late to learn how to follow along, get involved or lend a hand.
Mifflin County's Fifth Annual Mini-THON gets underway at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 6, before concluding at 10 p.m. The nine-hour day-long event will keep students and volunteers on their feet inside the school.
It's modeled after Penn State's IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, better known simply as "Thon," which was held the weekend of Feb. 17-18 and raised a record $16.9 million to fight pediatric cancer by supporting the Four Diamonds Foundation at Penn State Health Children's Hospital in Hershey.
The Four Diamonds Foundation assists pediatric cancer patients and their families with expenses they might incur and fund pediatric cancer research. Each year, 16,000 children under age 19 across the country are diagnosed with cancer -- that's one child about every 33 minutes.
Last year, Mifflin County students and organizers raised $25,071.90 for Four Diamonds, which easily topped their goal of $20,000.
This year, Sara Sutton, art teacher at Mifflin County High School and one of the organizers of Mini-THON, said the goal is $30,000.
Organizers are still seeking sponsors for the event, with sponsorship categories ranging from $50 to $500 and above.

Spaghetti dinner March 15
Mifflin County High School's Mini-THON will also be hosting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser at 7 p.m. on
Friday, March 15, at the high school commons. The cost is $10 per meal, which includes spaghetti, tossed salad, roll, drink and dessert. Meals are available for dine-in or takeout. Please comment on the MCHS Mini-THON Facebook page if you plan to purchase.
