The Juniata Valley's first storm of the winter season arrived Saturday, with heavy snow through the afternoon causing havoc on area roads and leading numerous agencies to close early and the forcing schools to cancel athletic events.
Before the weekend, Lewistown had seen just under one inch of measurable snowfall so far this winter. By Saturday night, snowfall reports ranged from four inches in Lewistown at 7:46 p.m. to eight inches in Mount Union at 9:50 p.m. Two inches were also recorded in Middleburg by 2:35 p.m. Saturday.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning through 10 p.m. Saturday. Much of the snow that fell was recorded prior to 7 p.m.
On Saturday afternoon, the westbound lanes of Route 22 between Arch Rock Road in Mifflintown and Lewistown reopened after a multi-vehicle crash at the ramp at noon. The road was closed for more than two hours, said Timothy Nebgen, press officer for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on Saturday.
PennDOT placed vehicle and speed restrictions on several area roadways, most of which were lifted by Saturday night. Many restaurants and businesses closed early due to the weather and road conditions.
