Tai Chi classes kick off in March

By Greg Williams 2 min read

YEAGERTOWN -- Beth Harlan admits attendance for programming at the Derry Township Senior Center in Yeagertown has lagged compared to other centers in the area.

Harlan, senior community services supervisor for the Mifflin-Juniata Regional Services Corp. - The Care Network, decided to bring in some popular health and wellness programs to give those numbers a boost.

In particular, the Tai Chi class. The sessions, typically taught by instructor Chris Toddes, fill up quickly.

"This Tai Chi class will be the first to be held at the Derry Township Senior Center," Harlan said. "We started Centers in Motion programming there a couple months ago and I am hoping this brings more out into the community."

She added Centers in Motion programming is held at the Derry Township Senior Center, located at 15 W. Mill St., Yeagertown, once a month.

The eight-week Tai Chi class will be offered from 10 to 11 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, starting March 4. The sessions are free for seniors age 60 and older.

Harlan said studies show that Tai Chi improves symptoms of arthritis, reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, provides pain relief and promotes overall well-being.

Space is limited. The registration deadline is Friday, Feb. 23, by contacting Harlan at (717) 320-8367 or
