LEWISTOWN -- Mifflin County School District's Board of Directors held a special voting meeting Thursday evening to appoint a new director. This vacant seat was originally filled by Noah Wise who is now a member of the Mifflin County Commissioners.
Board members received applications from five individuals who were interested in filling the seat that Wise left following his oath of office as a Mifflin County Commissioner.
Applicants included Kenneth Civitts, Robert Nulton, Rose Schulz, Mary Lou Sigler and Aaron Wilson. However, only Schulz, Sigler and Wilson were in attendance at last night's meeting.
The three candidates drew numbers from a bowl to determine who would pitch their qualifications to the existing board members. Each individual spoke to the board of directors according to the order they drew their numbers.
During the applicant speeches, the other two candidates had to move to a separate room. After each candidate presented a two-minute statement to the board, the seated directors made their nominations for the vacant seat.
Director Don Wright nominated Schulz and Director Terry Styers nominated Sigler. Then the board voted in a roll call vote to decide the final director of the school board.
Mifflin County School Board directors appointed Schulz as their ninth member in a 6-2 vote with Styers and Diane Stewart in opposition.
Schulz took her seat among the rest of the board where she will serve through Nov. 30, 2025.
