LEWISTOWN -- Officials announced that Mifflin County will be submitting three applications for the 2024 Marcellus Shale Legacy Grant.
Planning director James Lettiere described qualifying projects to commissioners Thursday during the board's regular meeting.
The first project would improve the Reedsville Playground Youth Baseball Field in Brown Township.
According to the application, the Brown Township Board of Supervisors has been working to upgrade the youth baseball field for several years. The field is now regulation for league play with a new backstop, player's benches, dugouts and a concession stand.
With the field being in use by the leagues the need to add bleachers for the spectators to utilize so they don't have to stand through the entire game. These bleachers are estimated to cost $7,936.
The second application was for improvements to the Longfellow Ballfield in Bratton Township. The application states that with the increased use of the park after COVID and now with baseball games the field is in need of some additional safety measures as well as parking spaces and seating.
The application says the fence along the first base line needs to be repaired, along with the basketball court fence. The township would also like to install moveable aluminum bleachers and three benches around the walking track and playground equipment area for additional seating for games and recreational use.
Additionally, the township hopes to expand its upper parking lot to help decrease the overflow of cars lined up along the road. These renovations are expected to cost $15,374.
The third application was to add safety measures to the McVeytown Boat Launch and parking lot area in Oliver and Bratton townships, and McVeytown Borough.
The improvements are expected to cost $1,241. Included in the cost would be the replacement of a fence around the parking lot, "no parking" signs and repainting the lines. The townships hope to keep vehicles from causing more damage to the surrounding areas.
Commissioners also approved of the following:
A request for exoneration of 2023 county portion per capita taxes for McVeytown Borough and Menno Township;
A request for exoneration of 2023 county real estate tax bill and to relieve the tax collector from collecting the following: Parcel No. 14,15-0136 in Brown Township, due to a court-ordered adjustment the taxable portion of parcel in the amount of $697.03; Parcel No. 14,15-0136,001 in Brown Township due to a court order issued adjustment to the taxable portion of parcel in the amount of $421.06;
A project modification request for the Reentry Strategic Planning Grant reducing salary expenses and increasing consulting and changing the director name;
A purchase of service agreement with Sandra Herto to provide cleaning services at the Magisterial District Judge 58-3- 03 at a rate of $200 per month for the year 2024;
An Inmate Housing Agreement with Union County for Dec. 1, 2023 through Dec. 31, 2025;
A Memorandum of Understanding with PA Care, LLC, dba State College Medical for medication assisted treatment for inmates as recommended by Warden Kormanic;
The Reappointment of Christina Calkins-Mazur to the MCIDA Board for a four-year term;
Approved of appointments to the LEPC Board for two-year terms for Martin Bubb at the Granville Township Police Department; Mary Herto at Granville Township; Noah Wise as Mifflin County Commissioner; Andrea Acalde as coroner; Brian Fleegal, Phil Lucas and Ashlee Crownover in Public Safety; Eric Howell at FAME EMS, Eric Moist at Chief Logan Volunteer Fire Department; Clint Aurand at the Mifflin County School District; Cindy Sunderland for CARS; Andre French at the Mifflin County Regional Police Department, Debra Bargo at the Lewistown Borough, Craig Wheeler at the Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital; Wade Daughtry at Trinity Plastics, Dale Stehley for Public at Large and Robert Moore, Eagle Haz-mat;
