LEWISTOWN -- Art comes in many different forms.
Jake Kushner was 12 years old when his passion for tattooing began. He recalls tagging along to see a family member get their first tattoo.
"It was the first time it clicked in my head that they're doing artwork that'll last forever on people," said Kushner. "(I thought), that's awesome. I wanna do that one day. Here I am about to be 10 years in the industry, and I couldn't imagine doing anything else."
Kushner said he always wanted his own shop by the time he reached 10 years of tattooing and he is proud to say his dream has become a reality. He recently opened Sky Bird Tattoo -- located at 505 Electric Avenue.
Hours of operation are noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. To make an appointment, call (717) 247-6844.
Originally from Butler, Kushner said he learned his craft when he moved to Mississippi to do an apprenticeship. In 2018, Kushner said he moved with his family to Lewistown, where he began working at a local tattoo shop.
"For the future of my shop, I hope to keep doing cool artwork that'll last forever. I've always loved the art of the craft and hope to continue that for as long as I can," he said .
Sky Bird Tattoo opened in September 2023 and also offers body piercings. They currently employ two, as well as one apprentice.
"Without our amazing clientele I wouldn't be where I am today," he said. "I want to thank everyone who has supported me so I can be here today."
Kushner also said he is thankful to his significant other, who "gave me the motivation" to further his career.
