Saturday fire rips through Mifflintown apartment

75 firefighters worked to extinguish blaze

MIFFLINTOWN -- Eleven people were displaced due to an apartment building fire that tore through Main Street Saturday night.

According to Juniata County Department of Emergency Services Public Information Officer Glenn Kerstetter, the fire involved five rental units between 104 and 106 North Main Street.

Kerstetter said firefighters from Mifflintown Hose Company and mutual aid were dispatched to the fire at 2:41 a.m. Then upon arrival, Mifflintown Assistant Fire Chief Matt Myers requested a second alarm due to heavy fire at the rear of the building with occupants believed to be inside.

Fire officials said the second alarm brought an estimated 75 emergency responders.

The local chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting fire victims.

Crews cleared the scene at 5:56 a.m. No injuries were reported.

Officials said the investigation has been tuned over to the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshall.

Responding companies included Mifflintown Hose Company, Friendship Fire Company of Port Royal, Fayette Fire Company, Beale Township Fire Company, Delaware Township Fire Company, East Waterford Fire Company, Thompsontown Fire Company, Richfield Fire Company, Yeagertown Fire Company, Chief Logan Fire Company, Reedsville Fire Company, City Hook & Ladder, Junction Fire Company, Newport Fire Company, Central Juniata EMS, Port Royal EMS and local fire police responded to the blaze. Units were assisted by Pennsylvania State Police, PennDOT, and PPL Electric Utilities.
