LEWISTOWN -- Mifflin County School District's Board of Directors announced last evening at their meeting that former director Noah Wise's position is vacant. Any interested candidates are required to submit a director vacancy application form by noon on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024.
The individual who receives this vacant position will remain on the board from Jan. 18, 2024 to Nov. 30, 2025.
To qualify for the vacancy, candidates must be of good moral character, be at least 18 years old, have been a resident for at least one year prior to the date of appointment and not be a holder of any office or position as specified in section 322 of the school code.
Applicants should not be a member of the municipal council or removed from any office of trust under federal, state or local laws for any malfeasance in such office. Candidates should not be engaged in a business transaction with the school district, be employed by the school district or receive pay for services from the school district, except as provided by law.
The candidate chosen will take and subscribe to the oath or affirmation prescribed by statute before entering the duties of the office. They shall file a statement of financial interests with the board secretary or designee before taking the oath of office, annually by May 1 while serving on the board and by May 1 of the year after leaving the board.
Applications for the vacant seat may be submitted in person or mailed to the Mifflin County School District Administration Building, located at 201 Eighth Street, Lewistown. Those who apply may also send their forms to board secretary, Amy Smith at als02@mcsdk12.org.
All applications will be posted by 3 p.m. on Jan. 15, 2024, for the board of directors to view on the Board Docs platform; only Mifflin County School Board Directors will be able to view applications.
The Board of Directors will run a special voting meeting on Jan. 18, 2024, prior to the Committee-of-the-Whole meeting. All individuals who submitted applications for the board seat vacancy should plan to attend this meeting.
Prior to the selection process, all candidates will draw a number to determine the order of their interviews in front of the seated board members. These interviews will be open to the public, but only one candidate will be present in the boardroom during each interview while the remaining candidates will be moved to another room.
Each candidate will be allowed two minutes to make an opening statement. After all interviews have taken place, nominations will be made for the appointment of a director to fill the vacancy of Noah Wise. The selected candidate will begin their service on Jan. 18, 2024.
A voice poll will be taken from seated board members for their first choice from the list of nominations. From there, the board members will have a roll call vote to appoint a new director.
The new director will take their oath of office and will be seated immediately for the Committee-of-the-Whole meeting on Jan. 18.
If for whatever reason the board of directors does not come to an agreement within 29 days from today, a Mifflin County Judge will pick a candidate for the vacant seat.
