LEWISTOWN -- Revelers might enjoy the famous countdown on New Year's Eve in New York City's Times Square, but there are plenty of festivities to ring in 2024 in the Juniata Valley.
A broad range of businesses and non-profit and municipal agencies are offering activities this New Year's Eve to celebrate the arrival of 2024.
"As the old song goes, 'What are you doing New Year's Eve?' said Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau Executive Director Jenny Barron Landis, referring to the popular song written in the 1940s with the same title.
"The Juniata River Valley has a list of special events from live music to five-course dinners and a cornhole tournament," she added. "Mifflintown is hosting its sixth annual Bridge Drop, and that kicks off with a 5K in the afternoon. This holiday seems to generate new ideas each year. A very fitting start for a
brand new year."
Diners will find pork and sauerkraut, which are thought to bring luck in the coming year as well as four-course meals. There are parties with roller skating, live bands and deejays to roll in the new year.
Come "Bridge the Memories'' on New Year's Eve as Mifflintown presents the sixth annual Bridge Drop. It takes place from 10 p.m. to midnight on Sunday at Main and Bridge streets, Mifflintown.
The theme this year is "PSP and First Responders." The event is free. There will be ice sculptures located around Main and Bridge Streets in Mifflintown, goodie bags for the kids, free hot dogs and soup as well as entertainment by deejay Jim Martin. Don't forget to dress appropriately, especially if you're celebrating outdoors.
The Pennsylvania State Police will be handling the countdown, pending any calls, while a lighted replica of the former river bridge is lowered. For more information, call (717) 436-2700.
Start off the day with the Mifflintown New Year's Eve Festival 5K Run/Walk from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Registration begins at noon at Gridiron Pizza, 32 N. Main St. (rear entrance), Mifflintown. The 5K will step off at 1 p.m. Proceeds benefit the Paul W. Delauter Youth Center, 337 Washington Ave., Mifflintown, and Mifflintown Hose Co. No. 1, 510 Washington Ave., Mifflintown. New Year's Eve Prix Fixe dinner and show with RC3 is slated for Shy Bear Brewing, 35 Meadowbrook Ln., Lewistown, from 4 to 10 p.m. Sunday. The Prix Fixe five-course meal starts at 4 p.m. and will be the only menu for patio or porch patrons. The cost is $55 per person. Reservations are encouraged. Each meal features duck with tart cherry sauce or salmon with black trumpet cream sauce, salad, soup, appetizer and dessert, and comes with a complimentary glass of black-tie sparkling wine. $50 per person.
