Write-in votes for JCSB directors to be determined

Juniata County ballot contained mostly uncontested races

MIFFLINTOWN -- With a ballot full on mostly-uncontested races, there was little question as to the results of election night in Juniata County.

The only real uncertainty was with the Juniata County School District Board of Directors, which had awaited the results of write-in campaigns to determine at least two seats.

Only two of the five directors up for re-election decided to run: Republican Douglas E. Kline in Region 3 (Delaware and Susquehanna townships) and Martha Jane Shirk (Mifflin, Mifflintown and Thompsontown boroughs), who cross filed in Region 6.

Both were unopposed as Kline collected 472 of 476 votes and Shirk had 235 of 246 votes, according to unofficial numbers on the county's website.

Former director Ray D. Page ran in Region 5 (Fermanagh Township) and won easily with 416 votes, despite a last-minute write-in campaign by current director Mark F. Wagner. There were also 90 write-in votes cast, some of which could belong to Wagner.

In Region 2 (Fayette Township), there were 399 write-in votes. The names of potential candidates who received write-in vote results have not been released yet. Current director Malinda "Mindy" Carvell did not seek re-election.

"That was our biggest township, and there wasn't anyone on the ballot," said Eva Weyrich, director of elections for Juniata County, about the large number of write-in votes received.

The identities of the write-in candidates and their vote totals should be posted on the county's website on Monday, Weyrich said; however, official results will not be available for a few weeks.

In Region 7 (Beale and Milford townships), there were 57 write-in votes. The names of potential candidates who received write-in vote results have not been released yet. Current director David J. Fry did not seek re-election.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

Republican Cory J. Snook was the only name on the ballot as he was re-elected another term in office. He garnered 4,214 of the 4,265 votes cast.

Born and raised in Juniata County, Snook graduated from Juniata High School in 1993. He completed his bachelor's degree in political science at Lebanon Valley College in 1997, and subsequently graduated from the Dickinson School of Law of the Pennsylvania State University with a Juris Doctor degree in May 2000.

Upon passing the bar exam in July 2000, he eventually opened his law office in Mifflintown. Snook was initially elected in November 2009 to be the top law enforcement official in Juniata County. Since taking that office, he has successfully prosecuted thousands of criminal and juvenile cases.

PROTHONOTARY

Republican Lori A. Ferry won re-election and was unopposed, winning 4,563 of the 4,594 votes. She has been working as a clerk of court for eight years.

CORONER

Republican Lee E. Snyder will continue to serve as Juniata County coroner, winning 4,562 of the 4,594 votes, as the lone name on the ballot.

COUNTY AUDITOR

Republicans Miriam "Mim" Anstine and Christie Smith Yorks were the top two vote-getters with 3,343 and 3,096 votes. Democratic nominee Laura A. Cunningham will join them in office as she received 1,579 votes. There were a total of 8,037 votes cast. They were the only names on the ballot.

DISTRICT JUDGE

Josh Imes will officially take over for long-time and well-respected Magisterial District Judge Jacqueline Leister, who is retiring from District 41-3-02 after 36 years on the bench. Imes was the only individual appearing on the ballot and he garnered 2,130 of 2,176 votes.

Imes has served as a social studies teacher for the past 18 years in the Juniata County School District and studied political science and history at Shippensburg University.

District 41-3-02 encompasses the Juniata County boroughs of Mifflin and Port Royal as well as Beale, Lack, Milford, Spruce Hill, Turbett, Tuscarora and Walker townships.

GREENWOOD SCHOOL BOARD

For Region 3 of the Greenwood School Board, candidates Jim Hahn and Gilbert R. Davis were re-elected for the two spots. Hahn had 69 votes, while Davis received 42. There were a total of 80 write-in votes, out of the 191 votes cast. They have not been assigned to a write-in candidate, so the winner remains in question.

STATE RESULTS

Justice of the Supreme Court: Republican Carolyn Carluccio defeated Democrat Daniel McCaffery 3,741-1,220 by a margin in Juniata County. There were also 7 write-in votes.

Justice of the Superior Court: Republicans Maria Battista and Harry F. Smail Jr. were the top two vote-getters over Democrats Jill Beck and Timika Lane in the county. Battista had 3,273 votes, while Smail added 2,966 and Beck at 1,296 and Lane at 803. There were also 3 write-in votes.

Judge of the Commonwealth Court: Republican Megan Martin outdistanced Democrat Matt Wolf by a 3,877-1,049 margin in the county. There were also 7 write-in votes.

Superior Court Retain Jack Panella: Voters in Juniata County favored retaining Panella by a 2,294-1,830 margin.

Superior Court Retain Victor P. Stabile: Voters in the county favored retaining Stabile by a 2,455-1,672 margin.

Municipal results

BEALE TOWNSHIP

•Supervisor: Republican James E. Telfer Jr. received 168 of the 172 votes and was unopposed on the ballot.

•Auditor: Republican Carla A. Robinson received all 178 votes in her election night win. She was unopposed.

•Constable: 13 votes for write-ins.

DELAWARE TOWNSHIP

•Supervisor: Republican Benjamin Kerstetter won with 297 of the 301 votes. He was unopposed.

•Auditor: Republican Rebecca Mosebey received 301 of 305 votes as she was unopposed; and there were 40 write-in totals for the two-year position.

•Constable: There were 19 write-in votes.

FAYETTE TOWNSHIP

•Supervisor: Republican Chris Strawser was elected with 660 of 684 votes. He was unopposed.

•Auditor: Republican Christine Hart received 598 votes to win over Democrat Edward Rozell, who had 134 votes.

•Constable: Republican Glenn S. Kerstetter won with 701 of 708 votes as he was unopposed.

FERMANAGH TOWNSHIP

•Supervisor: Republican Jason Davis received 578 of 593 votes to win.

Auditor: There were 25 write-in votes.

Constable: There were 19 write-in votes.

GREENWOOD TOWNSHIP

Supervisor: Republican Kevin J. Dougherty won with 105 of 111 votes cast. He was unopposed.

Auditor: There were 33 write-in votes.

Constable: There were 12 write-in votes.

LACK TOWNSHIP

Supervisor: Democrat Joel K. Love won 89 of 94 votes on election night.

Auditor: Democrat Gail L. Corwell received 84 of 85 votes to win her election.

Tax Collector: Republican Trisha Robinson earned a two-year term with 96 of 101 votes cast.

Constable: There were 7 write-in votes.

MIFFLIN BOROUGH

Mayor: There were 18 write-in votes.

Council: Democrat George Berrier was elected with 38 of 67 votes. There were 29 write-in votes.

Auditor: There were 4 write-in votes; and there were 7 write-in votes for the four-year term. For the two-year term, there were 4 write-in votes.

Constable: There were 3 write-in votes.

MIFFLINTOWN BOROUGH

Council: Republicans Richard R. Zimmerman Jr. and Mark A. Turns Jr. were the top vote-getters with 89 and 84 votes. There were 13 write-ins for the other two seats.

Auditor: There were 3 write-in votes; and there was 1 vote for the four-year term.

Constable: There were 3 write-in votes.

MILFORD TOWNSHIP

Supervisor: Republican Leon E. Zimmerman defeated Democrat Douglas G. Brackbill by a 306-211 margin.

Auditor: There were 28 write-in votes; and there were 17 votes for the four-year term.

Constable: There were 20 write-in votes.

MONROE TOWNSHIP

Supervisor: Republican Curtis R. Stroup won easily, receiving 323 of 326 votes. He was unopposed. Republican James Neimond was unopposed as he got 321 of 323 votes on election night for the four-year term.

Auditor: Republican Richard A. Leitzel received 316 of 317 votes in his victory.

Constable: There were 25 write-in votes.

PORT ROYAL BOROUGH

Mayor: Republican Dylan Cisney will remain in his post after receiving 163 of 170 votes.

Council: Republicans Adam C. Bryner, Grace Goss, Teresa A. Murphy and John Towsey won seats. Bryner was the top vote-getter with 168, followed by Goss at 148, Murphy at 147 and Towsey at 143. There were 613 votes cast. For the two-year terms, Republican Nicholas Walters received 156 votes and Democrat Stephen L. Bargo with 133 for the two seats.

Auditor: There were 8 write-in votes; there were 4 write-in votes for the four-year term; and there were four write-in votes for the two-year term.

Constable: There were 7 write-in votes.

SPRUCE HILL TOWNSHIP

Supervisor: Republican Justin E. Imes won the election with 191 of 198 votes. He was unopposed.

Auditor: Republican Renee S. Fry was unopposed and won with 199 of 201 votes.

Constable: Republican Garth E. Brackbill earned 192 of 196 votes as he was unopposed.

SUSQUEHANNA TOWNSHIP

Supervisor: Republican Joshua E. Condran was unopposed and received 168 of 185 votes; and Republican Chester Strawser was unopposed for the four-year term and won with 158 of 175 votes; and Republican Harold Arnold took the two-year term with 161 of 175 votes as he was unopposed.

Auditor: There were 12 write-in votes.

Tax collector: There were 23 write-in votes.

Constable: There were 11 write-in votes.

THOMPSONTOWN BOROUGH

Council: Republicans Robert L. Speece Jr. and Andrew Lenig were the top vote-getters with 84 and 72 votes, while Democrat Roger K. Stutts was third with 64 votes. All three earned seats as 232 votes were cast.

Auditor: There were 8 write-in votes; 7 write-ins for four-year term; and 8 write-ins for two-year term.

Constable: There were 8 write-in votes.

TURBETT TOWNSHIP

Supervisor: Republican Gary Leister was unopposed and received 201 of 205 votes.

Auditor: Republican Glenda Fultz ran unopposed and got 202 of 203 votes; and Republican Thelma E. Leister earned 204 of 208 votes to win a two-year term.

Constable: There were 26 write-in votes.

TUSCARORA TOWNSHIP

Supervisor: Republican Joshua R. Foster defeated Democrat Barry K. Milliken by a 172-117 margin.

Auditor: Republican Janice J. Owens had 258 of 265 votes as she ran unopposed.

Constable: Republican Catherine Fitzgerald won 250 of 261 votes for the win. She was unopposed.

WALKER TOWNSHIP

Supervisor: Republican Cory L. Deihl topped Democrat Derrick L. Casner, 383-129, for the victory.

Auditor: There were 37 write-in votes.

Constable: There were 40 write-in votes.
