LEWISTOWN -- For generations, millions of Americans have answered the call to serve. They've taken an oath to defend and preserve our nation's ideals of liberty and democracy.
Some of these patriots have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. On Veterans Day, those veterans are remembered for their service, dedication and valor by a country which is forever grateful for their sacrifice.
Mifflin County Veterans Affairs Director James "Jimmy" Conway also wanted to recognize those veterans who are living in the community.
That's why the annual Veterans Program is held in downtown Lewistown at the Historic Mifflin County Courthouse, located at 1 W. Market St. This year's event is scheduled for 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today.
"This is an event to pay tribute to our veterans," Conway explained. "It's our way to say thank you to our veterans who have served our country and to say thank you for your service."
The guest speaker will be Mifflin County native Nancy Simmons, who retired with the rank of captain after serving 30 years in the United States Navy.
The West Snyder Community Choir will also perform a medley of songs from the Revolutionary War through today, and also give a synopsis about the song.
The Milroy Honor Guard will attend, and "Taps" will be played at the end of the ceremony.
Light refreshments will be served by the Mifflin County High School Key Club. Admission to the event is free.
