MIFFLINTOWN -- Election officials across the Juniata Valley were anticipating a decent voter turnout on Tuesday.
That didn't happen, due to the large number of uncontested races on both the Mifflin and Juniata county ballots.
Juniata County Director of Elections Eva Weyrich, who predicted about 60% turnout, was disappointed by the 37% turnout on Tuesday.
"I was hopeful for a bigger percentage turnout," Weyrich said.
She blamed the lack of contested races in the election as the reason for the low number.
Weyrich spent most of the late morning Wednesday examining the 2,000 write-in ballots that her office received county-wide. She has to review every ballot for a valid candidate's name and assign the vote to that particular candidate.
While official results might not be available for two weeks, she expects the results to be updated on the county's website with write-in votes by Monday.
In Mifflin County, Elections Director Paula Hoffman said voter turnout was about 30%.
"I don't think we had the best turnout, but it was pretty average for a municipal election," she said.
Hoffman said the turnout was roughly the same when compared to May's primary election also.
Write-in results for Mifflin County are expected to be available on the county's website today.
