MIDDLEBURG -- A local teen and Midd-West High School student was killed in a motor vehicle crash early Monday on state Route 104 at its intersection with Troxelville Road.
Midd-West High School announced this week that grief support counselors were on-site as students mourned the loss of 16-year-old Hayden L. Gipson.
"It is with great sorrow and sadness that we need to inform you all about the death of one of our Midd-West High School students," the district announced on its website. "A tragic accident took the life of a beloved member of our school community from us, much too soon. We extend our deepest sympathies to the student's family, friends, classmates, teachers, and our entire school community."
Pennsylvania State Police at Selinsgrove said in a news release that the crash occurred at about 7:45 a.m. as the driver of a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse -- a 16-year-old who police did not name -- was negotiating a turn.
The report states that a 1995 Kenworth W900, driven by 49-year-old Jason Sones, of Watsontown, was turning left from Troxelville Road to travel on to state Route 104.
Police said the truck trailer had completed its turn into the northbound lane, but the trailing unit was still crossing over the southbound lane.
Witnesses at the scene reported that the windshield of the Mitsubishi was heavily frosted and that it was traveling at an elevated rate of speed.
Police said the Mitsubishi struck the trailing unit, then traveled beneath it. The teen was reported to be wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
Sones was not reported to have been injured.
Penns Creek Fire Co., Penns Creek Ambulance, Reliance Hose Co. EMS, Ebright's Towing, Snyder County Coroner's Office, Penn State Police F Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit, Forensic Services Unit and Motor Carrier Safety Assurance Program members assisted at the scene.
According to Gipson's obituary, visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at Beavertown God's Missionary Church, 1693 Creek Rd., Middleburg, followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. with the Beavertown God's Missionary Church Ministers officiating.
Burial will be held in Glendale Cemetery, Middleburg.
