MC Commissioners show support for veterans

LEWISTOWN -- In a show of demonstration of support for the brave men and women of the military, the Mifflin County Commissioners proudly announced their endorsement of Operation Green Light for Veterans at Thursday's meeting.
This heartfelt gesture aims to salute and honor those transitioning from active service. Residents are encouraged to participate by displaying green lights in their windows, Nov. 6-12, as a symbol of respect and gratitude.
The proclamation sheds light on the profound respect and admiration Mifflin County holds for its veterans. These individuals have not only defended the nation's freedom but continue to serve their communities in various capacities, from the American Legion to civil services.
With nearly 200,000 service members transitioning to civilian life annually, and a significant increase predicted soon, the emphasis on supporting these heroes is more critical than ever. Studies reveal a substantial number of these individuals face high stress levels during this transition, with a heightened risk of suicide in the first year post-service.
By recognizing Operation Green Light for Veterans, Mifflin County joins the National Association of Counties in its mission to appreciate the sacrifices of the United States military personnel. This initiative serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of honoring those who have given immeasurably to preserve freedom.
In a separate move emphasizing the county's commitment to environmental and economic wellness, the Mifflin County Commissioners also agreed to join the coalition formed by SEDA-COG.
This coalition aims to apply for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Brownfield Coalition Assessment Grant. As part of this collaboration, Mifflin County will unite with Clinton and Northumberland Counties, bolstering their collective capabilities to address environmental concerns, revitalize brownfield sites, blight remediation, and promote sustainable development.
Recognizing the importance of the EPA Brownfield Coalition Assessment Grant, the county is excited about the potential benefits this partnership can bring. By pooling resources, knowledge, and expertise, the coalition aspires to contribute significantly to the economic and environmental well-being of the region.
In other news, Commissioners:
• Approved a request by Newton Hamilton Borough Tax Collector Melody Kane for exoneration of 2023 county portion per capita taxes;
• Approved Resolution No. 35 of 2023 concerning the delegation of powers for the Mifflin County Solid Waste Authority.
• Approved a 10-year agreement with Dr. Shawn P. McGlaughlin, MD, from Mifflinburg, starting Jan. 1, 2024, to provide medical services to inmates at the Mifflin County Correctional Facility at a rate of $1,275 per week;
• Approved an agreement with Juniata County to house their inmates from Jan. 1, 2024, to Dec. 31, 2027;
• Approved the Application for County Aid - 2023 Allocation: Wayne Township – $4,929, Brown Township – $5,192;
• Approved the Purchase of Service Agreement for potential use by Children and Youth. This includes agreements with Centre County Youth Services Bureau, Blaise Erzar, Concern Professional Services, and Community Specialist Corporation;
• Reappointed William Campbell, Jr., and Michele Bair for four-year terms to the Mifflin County Planning Commission;
• Reappointed Michael Krentzman to the SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority for a five-year term;
• Approved a Subrecipient Agreement with the Mifflin County Industrial Development for a $500,000 loan for the demolition and development of select buildings at the MCIDC Plaza;
• Approved the resignation of Tiffany Brought as CDBG Grants Fiscal Manager effective Nov. 3;
• Approved the hiring of Justice Wise as Part-time Planning Technician starting Nov. 6;
• Approved the promotions of Eleana Eckley and Julia Lyter from Children and Youth Caseworker I to Caseworker II effective Nov. 6;
• Approved the promotion of Nathan Reese from Children and Youth Caseworker II to Caseworker III effective Nov. 6;
• Approved the hiring of Joseph R. Lyter, Jr. and Andrew P. Thierwechter as Sheriff Security Guards starting Nov. 6.
