Evidence based education enriches learning

MIFFLIN -- Nestled in the heart of Juniata County is a transformative institution that's changing the lives of countless youths.

The Soaring Heights School (SHS) in Mifflin is more than a school; it's a sanctuary of learning and growth for students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder or those in need of emotional support.

Soaring Heights in Mifflin began in 2019 and is one of seven such schools throughout the Keystone State. Pinnacle Healthcare founded and funded the schools.

From the exterior, one might mistake SHS for any other educational institution in the state. But step inside its corridors, and you'll find a vibrant, nurturing environment where every child is treated with respect, dignity, and love.

"We aim to provide the best possible environment for students to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally," said Program Director Gabrielle Fisher. "With small classes and specially trained staff, we can focus on each child's unique needs."

One of the school's strengths lies in its dedicated and passionate team of educators and staff. They use a wide range of behavior management strategies, including techniques rooted in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).

ABA is a scientific approach to understanding and changing behavior. It's particularly effective for autistic children, as it helps them develop essential skills and reduce behaviors that might be harmful or affect learning.

The school's commitment to maintaining a high staff-to-student ratio ensures every child receives the individualized attention they need. This isn't just about academics; it's about understanding each student's unique challenges and strengths. Data-based decision-making lies at the heart of SHS' approach, making sure strategies are tailored to each student's specific needs.

"We train our staff to use specific techniques to improve communication, social skills, academics, and vocational abilities," Fisher said. "We collect data daily to track progress and adjust our methods as needed. It's a very personalized approach."

For students aged 14 and older, the transition to adulthood is an area of significant focus. SHS provides specialized transition services designed to hone their strengths and equip them with essential skills. Whether it's preparing them for employment, independent living, or post-secondary education, the goal remains the same: to make sure every student has a bright future ahead.

But the holistic approach at Soaring Heights doesn't stop at academics or behavior management. The school recognizes many of its students need additional support in various areas. To this end, they offer a comprehensive suite of related services. From speech and physical therapy to

occupational therapy, students have access to a range of supports that cater to their individualized educational plans (IEP).

What sets SHS apart is its unwavering commitment to evidence-based practices. Drawing from a rich pool of data-driven research, the school employs the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis, seamlessly blending educational and behavioral domains. This potent combination provides an intensive school program that enhances learning outcomes for its students.

The school's trauma-focused approach stands as a testament to its understanding of the varied challenges its students face. Recognizing that many of its attendees have experienced traumatic life events, SHS offers specialized support to help them heal and move forward. Collaboration between teachers, therapists, and families is key.

"Some of the kids we get have experienced serious trauma. What we try to do is be supportive and earn their trust," Fisher said. "It's our job to give them the best education, support, and encouragement we can give them. It's crucial that everyone be on the same page."

The ultimate goal for SHS is clear and commendable: to foster independence in its students. By equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need, the school hopes each child can integrate into a natural environment that suits their needs. In doing so, they prime these students to become active, productive members of the community.

"Our priority is preparing students for success once they transition out of Soaring Heights," Fisher said. "That's why we focus heavily on building life skills and independence."

In a world where understanding is more important than ever, institutions like the Soaring Heights School stand as shining examples of what's possible when passion meets purpose.

The Soaring Heights School's journey is a poignant reminder of the power of empathetic and inclusive education. As we look to the future, the accomplishments of SHS offer a sense of anticipation, inspiration, and excitement.

With rising autism rates nationwide, the need for supportive schools continues to grow. Soaring Heights plays a crucial role in guaranteeing students who learn differently have access to personalized education. Though small in size, its impact reverberates across many young lives.

Fisher summarized, "Our greatest reward is seeing students make progress in ways thought impossible. We applaud their hard work and resilience. Every accomplishment, big or small, is a cause for celebration. I love this school and what we do here."

What other breakthroughs can we expect in the realm of inclusive education? And most important, how many more lives will be touched and transformed? The Soaring Heights School continues to offer us a glimpse of the incredible potential in every child when given the chance, the support, and the love they need to thrive.
