LEWISTOWN -- With Goose Day a week away, it seemed like the perfect time to take a gander at a new flock of geese that's landed in the Juniata Valley.
Five new geese - only four were actually unveiled - are now on display around Lewistown as part of the Wild Geese Flock Together Public Art Project.
"The goal of this project is to recognize our unique local tradition of Goose Day through the talent of local artists while strengthening community spirit and enhancing tourism," said Sam Price, executive director of Community Partners RC&D in Lewistown.
A construction crew was out and about on Friday preparing each of the landing sites for the new geese. They include:
"Bruce the Goose"
Residing outside Drayer on East Market Street at the five points intersection, Bruce landed across the street from another member of the flock, "Town Goose."
The Mifflin County Abuse Network sponsored this goose, with Kay Kirkland as the artist. An unveiling celebration for "Bruce the Goose" will be held during Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.
"Lewie"
Near 213 to 215 West Market Street is the landing spot for "Lewie," sponsored by Ron Shelan and painted by Karl Leitzel. Shelan honored those in the area who helped him over the years along with some of his favorite buildings.
"Panther Pride"
Sponsored by the Lewistown Area High School alumni, "Panther Pride" landed at Lombardy Circle, just off South Main Street. This goose was painted by Todd Cubbison. A celebration is scheduled for 1 p.m. today to welcome the goose to its new home.
"Dr. George C. Gander"
Located at Lewistown Community Health Center, 106 Derry Heights Blvd. in Lewistown, Primary Health Network was the sponsor of this new goose. Sara Sutton was the artist. The doctor's unveiling will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, which is Goose Day.
"Happy Travels Goose"
The fifth and final landing can be found at the Holiday Inn Express in Reedsville. "Happy Travels Goose" was sponsored by the Holiday Inn Express and the Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau. Tim Mateer was the artist for this goose.
