DCNR to celebrate Pa. forests with Walk in Penn's Woods
HARRISBURG -- The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) will participate in a statewide initiative for annual Walk in Penn's Woods events Sunday, Oct. 1.
"Participating in Walk in Penn's Woods events is a great way to learn more about Pennsylvania's forests and the opportunities they provide," DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn said. "Whether it is for recreation, birding, learning more about the benefits of forests, or simply wanting to spend more time outdoors, I encourage everyone to consider joining one of these walks across the Commonwealth."
Walk in Penn's Woods events are organized by the Pennsylvania Forestry Association and have taken place the first Sunday of October since 2017. The walks provide an excellent opportunity to get out, have fun, and learn about Pennsylvania's forests, to see forests in new ways, and to understand and appreciate the many values held in the woods.
Volunteers and DCNR staff lead the hikes, which are usually about one or two miles, but can be longer depending on the location and its terrain. More than 60 walks are scheduled this year, with 28 occurring in state parks and forests.
A full list of Walk in Penn's Woods Events can be found on the Pennsylvania Forestry Association website. Walks are listed by county and event descriptions share whether registration is required, the difficulty of the walk and whether it is accessible.
PennDOT Mifflin County work schedule for the week of Oct. 2
CLEARFIELD -- The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the following schedule of maintenance activities in Mifflin County the week of Oct. 2. Work in Mifflin County for the coming week includes:
Bridge Maintenance and Cleaning
• Route 22 in Oliver Township. Monday, Oct. 2, through Friday, Oct. 6. This work takes place off the roadway and has minimal, if any, traffic impact.
• Route 522 in Decatur Township. Monday, Oct. 2, through Friday, Oct. 6. This work takes place off the roadway and has minimal, if any, traffic impact.
Shoulder Maintenance
• Route 1002 (Honey Creek Road/New Lancaster Valley Road) in Armagh and Brown townships. Monday, Oct. 2, through Friday, Oct. 6. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control.
PennDOT urges motorists to exercise caution in these and all work zones to ensure their safety and the safety of county maintenance staff. The schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions, emergencies or other unforeseen interruptions.
