LEWISTOWN -- A Reedsville man charged with murder in connection to the disappearance of a Calvert County, Md., man was extradited to Maryland Thursday afternoon.
Mifflin County Regional Police Department Chief Andre French confirmed that the 47-year-old Brandon R. Holbrook was transported from Mifflin County by Maryland authorities around 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
Joseph Anthony Shymanski, 51, was reported missing on Labor Day and the investigation led authorities to a property in Brown Township, where police say human remains were discovered. Shymanski was reportedly a prominent photographer in the D.C. area.
On Monday, those remains were identified as Shymanski. A news release from the Mifflin County Coroner's Office noted that the remains, located on Sept. 7, were identified through forensic odontology.
Holbrook is facing charges of first-degree murder, second-degree murder and first-degree assault, according to police.
Police said remains were found several hundred yards from Holbrook's residence.
French noted that federal authorities are also involved in the case and will likely be handling any future charges against Holbrook, including charges related to the discovery of the remains.
"We are going to be charging him for the things that happened here," French explained. "The disposal and treatment of the body, crossing state lines from Maryland to Pennsylvania.
"He's going to be charged federally, so you're not going to see it go through the Mifflin County courts," he added.
Investigators are still working to determine a motive, which French described as "undetermined" at this point.
Media outlets reported Calvert County deputies used license plate reading technology in the area near Shymanski's home to find Holbrook's out-of-state plates.
