LEWISTOWN -- They aren't digging with equipment yet, but the expansion of the Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology continues to progress.
School officials provided an update on the expansion project during the Operating Committee's monthly meeting at the Academy, 700 Pitt St., Lewistown, Thursday night.
Academy officials hope to gain land development approval on Sept. 18, and Economic Development Administration approval within the following weeks. They hope to have final bids to the Mifflin County School District school board by November.
Additionally, the Summit Early Learning playground will need to be relocated.
Construction pre-bid estimates for the project are at $9.4 million.
Greenhouse
renovation
The Academy is working with Daniel Firth on the renovation of the greenhouse. The project includes the removal of glass and replacing it with polycarbonate, a material that is used by many greenhouses, as well as installing a new heating system and irrigation system.
Adult class

The Academy's new electrical installation class filled up quickly and there's a waiting list of 20 potential students for the next one, said Mike McMonigal, supervisor of Adult and Post-Secondary Education.
Other news
In personnel news, the Academy approved the following, contingent upon receipt of required documentation:
• Abygale Abrashoff as a part-time EMS course coordinator/instructor.
• Larry Winn as a construction teacher, at Step 1, intern at an annual salary of $44,000, retroactively effective to Sept. 11, 2023.
• Lauren Johnston as practical nursing simulation assistant, retroactively effective to Aug. 28, 2023.
In maintenance news,
• The compressor and air dryer need to be reinstalled at the Academy due to a wiring issue.
• The dishwasher in the Culinary Arts department needs to be programmed before it can be used.
