Officials hear presentation from Rail authority

LEWISTOWN -- Mifflin County Commissioners heard a presentation from the executive director of the SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority, during the board's meeting held on Thursday.
Steven Beattie provided an update on upcoming projects, which include bridge rehabilitation projects in the Juniata River Valley.
Beattie started in January as executive director and told commissioners that he is currently on a nine county tour, introducing himself.
Beattie also gifted commissioners a railroad map that includes railroads in the region. Currently rail lines run through Lewistown, Burnham and Maitland.
Beatti explained that the Rail Authority is working locally with PennDot to improve railroad signals. More specifically, the rail signals on Kish Pike and ramps on both Routes 522 and 322.
Commissioners also approved of the Mifflin County State Food Purchase Program Agreements for the Fiscal Year 2023-2024. These programs include:
Hand of Grace/Grace Covenant Church $19,394;
• Abuse Network $5,000;
• Bible Baptist/New Life Church Soup Kitchen $1,500;
• Bible Baptist/New Life Church $6,814;
• Calvary Bible Church $22,539;
• Lewistown VFW Post 7011 $2,500;
• Salvation Army $3,669;
• Human Services/Administration $3,373.29;
• Central Pennsylvania Food Bank $2,335.
In other news, commissioners approved of the following:
• Approved an offer for a property in Derry Township that is currently in repository for unsold properties for the amount of $1,000;
• Approved a project modification request for the Reentry Strategic Planning Grant extending the end date from September 30, 2023 to March 31, 2024;
• Approved an estimate from Treaster Valley Coatings LLC, Milroy, for repair on Courthouse steps in the amount of $7,950;
• Accepted a quote from Johnson Controls Fire Protection for the Correctional Facility Fire Protection upgrade in the amount of $42,944 for a fire alarm control panel that is currently in the jail and is 23 years old;
• Accepted bids for the trail project from Jay Fulkroad and Sons Inc. located in McAlisterville, that is expected to be completed before winter;
• Approved a purchase of service agreement for use, if needed, by Children and Youth which includes, Child Welfare Information System Data Sharing Agreement for the period Oct. 1, 2023 through Sept. 30, 2024, Pathways Adolescent Center located in Oil City, Cornell Abraxas located in Pittsburgh, Families United Network located in Muncy, and Kids Peace located in Schnecksville;
• Authorized the chairman to sign any and all documents related to the T-439 Bridge Replacement Project;
• Approved of the application for County Aid - 2023 Liquid Fuels Allocation for Granville Township in the amount of $6,116;
• Approved of the project modification request for the Pretrial Grant. According to Chief probation officer, Nick Wolfkiel this will allow them to keep more bracelets on their shelves to get inmates out quicker;
• Approved hiring Ayden Brannon and Caleb Rhodes for part-time Corrections Officer effective August 14;
• Approved the resignation of Robert Sidney from Lieutenant effective August 13.
