MIFFLINTOWN -- Juniata County athletics can start their sports seasons, knowing they are in good hands if they suffer an injury on the playing field.
The Juniata County School Board approved a contract for athletic trainer services with Go 4 Healthcare, Brigantine, N.J., at its regular monthly meeting at the Administration Office in Mifflintown Thursday night.
Per the agreement, services will be provided at a rate of $70.00 per hour for an athletic trainer and $105.00 per hour for overtime, effective Aug. 14, 2023.
The school district had to find a new provider because Geisinger was unable to offer these services to the district as it has in the past.
In other news, the board approved:
• An educational services agreement with Pyramid Healthcare Inc., which operates the Soaring Heights School in Mifflintown, for the 2023-24 school year. The rate for students receiving emotional support is $250 per day, autism support services is $302 per day and paraprofessional support is $136.50 per day.
• An inter-district agreement with the Mifflin County School District for non-public Title 1 Services with the Sacred Heart School in Lewistown for 2023-24 school year. This involves funds for Sacred Heart students that reside in the Juniata County School District attendance area.
• An agreement with the Tuscarora Intermediate Unit 11 in McVeytown to provide Title 1 services to Juniata Christian School for the 2023-24 school year, paid for from a Title 1 grant.
• A memorandum of understanding with the Lincoln Intermediate Unit 12 with regard to the Title III Program Consortium during the 2023-24 school year for language instruction for English learners and immigrant students.
• A contract with Southwood Psychiatric Hospital in Pittsburgh for the provision of academic tutoring services for students who are patients of the hospital for the 2023-24 school year.
• A five-year agreement for alternative education for disruptive youth with Nittany Learning Services, Pleasant Gap for the 2023-24 school year through the 2027-28 school year.
• School improvement plans for Juniata High School and Tuscarora Junior High School and authorized submission to the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
The board approved facility-use requests for:
• Tammy Brackbill, Fayette Community Carnival, East Juniata High School gymnasium, backup site for cornhole tournament, Aug. 5, 2023
• Desiree Rhea, Tuscarora Junior High School cheerleaders, Juniata High School gymnasium, cheer camp, Aug. 7 and 9-10.
• Abby Boreman, Juniata Touchdown Club, Dietrick Field/Klingensmith Stadium, Aug. 19.
• Bonita Gilson, Juniata Girls Basketball Booster Club, Juniata Elementary, Juniata High and Tuscarora Junior High school facilities, tournament, Nov. 3-6. This tournament had originally been approved for the weekend of Aug. 9-12 at the June Board Meeting.
The board approved a contract with Cocolamus Creek Disposal Services, McAlisterville, for refuse removal at a cost of $162,823 for East Juniata Elementary School, East Juniata High School, Juniata Elementary School, Juniata High School, Mountain View Elementary School, Tuscarora Junior High School and the district office from Sept. 1, 2023, through June 30, 2026.
The board approved field trips for:
• Juniata County Marching Band, performance at Harrisburg Senators baseball game, on Saturday, Aug 12.
• Juniata High School science students (30-40), water treatment plant tour, Mifflintown, on Thursday, Sept. 26.*
• East Juniata High School Advanced Placement English/Introduction to Theater Students, Schools Days at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, Manheim, on Thursday, Oct. 5.*
• Juniata High School Class of 2024, senior trip, Washington D.C., on Friday, Dec. 1.*
*Includes trips for which transportation is not district funded.
The board approved bus drivers for the 2023-24 school year.
