Rock ‘peace snake’ brings splash of color to Brown’s Mill Square

REEDSVILLE -- Reedsville recently welcomed a new resident to Brown's Mill Square.
Pearl, the Peace Snake, a snake made of painted rocks, was created to bring something positive and empowering to the community.
"She's something for everyone to enjoy either by just looking at or adding rocks to help Pearl grow," explained Valerie Bunch, a member of the Reedsville Community Association. Bunch came up with the idea to create a Peace Snake in Reedsville after seeing multiple social media posts from other areas. The idea was brought up at the next Reedsville Community Association meeting and everyone loved the idea. It was decided that this would be a great Third Friday project.
When naming the snake, Reedsville Community Association members Bunch, Keri Sowers, and Cass Spelas decided on the name Pearl because of something they all have in common -- the street they live on.
"Pearl is made up of rocks painted by children in the community," said Bunch. Pearl's head was painted by Myah Bunch, of Reedsville, and taken to June's Third Friday event, held on June 16, for the community to begin adding to. At the event, children had the opportunity to paint rocks, donated by local businesses.
Rocks will be available for youth to paint and add to Pearl at the next Third Friday event on July 21. There will also be a coloring contest and a fishing game for youngsters to enjoy.
Pearl will remain a permanent resident of the area, being displayed at Brown's Mill Square for everybody to add to and appreciate. "It's a nice addition to our little community and something for kids to participate in," Bunch said.
Third Friday is a great opportunity for people to enjoy family fun activities and support our local businesses which helps the community thrive.
The monthly allows area businesses to open their doors and welcome the community. The event also includes music, children's activities and plenty of food.
The first Third Friday event was held in May of this year, starting a new way for people to visit and explore the quiet area. The Reedsville Community Association continues to look for ways to draw interest in love to their little community, excited to grow the area, and give families the opportunity to spend time together.
