LEWISTOWN -- The Lewistown Borough Council announced the schedule of the Community Swim Days at its monthly meeting on Wednesday.
The Swim Days will run from Aug. 5-6, and residents can enjoy free swimming from noon to 5 p.m.
"The Council is looking for ways to give back to the community for everything the community does," Borough Manager Kim Zimmerman said. "One of those ways is to have a free swim day at the Community Pool on August 5 and 6, where any borough resident can come and swim for free."
Also, Mayor Deb Bargo honored the Pennsylvania State Police troopers shot on Saturday, June 17, in Mifflintown before the council meeting began.
Tpr. Jacques "Jay" F. Rougeau, 29, was killed in the line of duty, while Lt. James Wagner is still hospitalized with his injuries.
"Trooper Rougeau gave the ultimate sacrifice, and Trooper Wagner was shot and is still recovering. Our hearts and prayers go out to all involved," Bargo said. "I am working with Mifflintown Mayor Roxann McGinnis and their borough council to develop a tribute from our borough and county. This is a time to give of ourselves for those who protect us."
In addition, the Fire Convention is scheduled from August 10-12 at Rec Park. Live music, vendors, and camping will dot the park's landscape. Close to 100 campers are lined up so far.
In other borough news, the council:
• Approved $19,681.15 for repairs to the street sweeper, which has been idle in Harrisburg since May.
• Bargo addressed the issue of vehicles using "jake" (air) brakes on Kish and Charles Streets. This may require an ordinance change.
• Approved the VFW lot consolidation through the planning commission.
• Approved a handicapped parking spot for 148 Pannebaker Ave., pending receipt of the vehicle's placard.
• • Approved the encumbrance of the $7,340 of County SLF (Liquid Fuels) funding for potential alley paving.
• Approved Lisa Knudson to the Planning Commission.
• Approved the new School Resource Officer contract with increased hours from 6 to 8 per day during school.
• Approved the EADS Black's Hospital boundary change.
• Approved a handicapped spot at 157 Valley St. pending the completion of the Valley Street paving project.
• Received a grant to study the Rec Park Pool for possible improvements.
• The National Night Out will be on Tuesday, Aug. 1.
• The Council is waiting on a DCED ARPA grant of $1 million to fix the primary digester at the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
• The Borough is looking for lifeguards for the Rec Park Community Pool following the Fire Convention closing on Aug. 12.
