ORIENTAL -- A brand new route on the United States Bicycle Route System will have cyclists pass through Juniata and Snyder counties.
"The route provides an opportunity to ride through a number of state forests and state parks as well as the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon," according to a release from the Adventure Cycling Association.
The expanded route passes near Oriental, Juniata County, at routes 11/15 as well as Port Trevorton, Snyder County. The route runs along the Susquehanna River.
Utilizing BicyclePA Routes G, V, J and S, as well as a new section of a designated bike route in Franklin County, USBR 11 will weave through the commonwealth to connect New York and Maryland, the ACA said.
In all, the new route will travel through 14 Pennsylvania counties, including Adams, Centre, Clinton, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lycoming, Northumberland, Perry, Tioga, Union and York.
"USBR 11 also provides opportunities to visit small communities and towns in both rural and suburban settings as well as larger cities like York and provides a view of Pennsylvania's state capital, Harrisburg, while traveling along the Susquehanna River," the release said.
The new path will follow Route 11 through Selinsgrove and Shamokin Dam to Northumberland where it will follow Routes 147 and 405 to Houssels Run Road near Montandon. It runs briefly across Route 45 into Lewisburg before looping onto Route 192 through Lewisburg and Mifflinburg on its way to Centre County.
Rhonda Kelley, executive director of the Juniata River Valley Chamber of Commerce, said the new route will impact the local economy.
"Any activity that brings visitors to our area is good for our economy," Kelley said. "They will need to eat, gather supplies and possibly find lodging. Exciting news!"
