Yard sales rule roost at Reedsville Community Day event

REEDSVILLE -- Calling it a sign of the economic times, organizers have shifted some of the pricier aspects of Reedsville Community Day to the fall.
Yard sales have long been a staple of the day-long celebration, said Kay Semler, president of the Reedsville Community Association. But the higher-priced wares of other vendors have not sold as well recently. That precipitated the change.
"Something changed in the mindset of people," Semler explained. "We saw that people are out shopping for the bargain -- the 50 cent-, one dollar- and three dollar-items. Not the $20 to $40 items and not supporting our vendors."
So, the vendors that filled Vendor Square in Reedsville have been shifted to the Annual Apple Festival in September. Now, yard sales will rule the day.
"Reedsville Community Day is still a huge yard-sale event," Semler added. "They will be held throughout Brown Township with a concentration in Reedsville and Church Hill."
This year's town-wide event, featuring the community yard sale and food court at Brown's Mill Square, is slated for Saturday.
There will be several unique events, including the Mifflin County High School Drama Club Pancake Fundraiser starting at 7 a.m., Tyler Smith Benefit Bake Sale and Curbside Café food truck. All events will be at held at Brown's Mill Square on Main Street.
Michele's OIP and Pizzeria in Reedsville has organized the fundraiser for Smith, who passed away recently and is a former employee.
The Curbside Café truck is operated by the owner of the Sticky Bun Café in Yeagertown.
"We just transferred some of the events to a different time of the year," Semler said. "The Apple Festival will really replace Reedsville Community Day and become a tremendously successful event."
This includes the Little Miss Reedsville pageant, which has been expanded to crown a Mr. Reedsville. Both will now be held in the fall.
