BURNHAM -- Members of the Rotary Club and their friends and family gather Tuesday at Kish Park to celebrate veterans, healthcare workers and emergency responders during the organization's fourth Flag's for Heroes ceremony.

The event commemorates heroes, past and present.

Master of Ceremonies Jeff Gum discussed the meaning of the flag and the purpose of the Flags for Heroes ceremony.

Gum defined a hero as "regular people, doing regular things."

Other speakers included Mark Long, a representative for Pa. State Rep. Kerry Benninghoff, who wanted to thank and honor all heroes.

Dan Bishop, of Peaceful Minds Veterans Outreach -- an organization that has worked to help rehabilitate veterans since 2020 -- said as of 2021 there are 16.5 million living veterans in the United States.

"I feel like we're forgotten as veterans," said Bishop. "I'm here to help any way I can."

Kirk Thomas of Geisinger-Western Region thanked healthcare workers and housekeepers for their tireless efforts during the pandemic,

"As we come out of it many people are exhausted mentally and tired so be friendly and show grace."

President of the Rotary Club Jim Shilling closed the ceremony thanking attendees

Music was played by Katie Becker and prayer led by the Rev. Carla Volland.

Shilling and fellow Rotarian Paul Wilson lined a path at Kish Park with flags to honor those heroes who have passed away or endured COVID-19.

Medallions hung from flags with each sponsor's name attached.
