Parks to host fun-filled holiday programming

HUNTINGDON -- The weather forecast for the Fourth of July weekend and holiday is not spectacular. Thunderstorms are expected, according to AccuWeather.
Hopefully, that won't stop the holiday fun from happening at Greenwood Furnace and Whipple Dam state parks in Huntingdon.
The Huntingdon County state parks are offering free programs, starting on Saturday, for all ages. No registration is required.
"Come out and enjoy the weekend outdoors, learning about different types of animals and their habitats," said Jen Moore, environmental education specialist at Greenwood Furnace and Whipple Dam state parks. "There are programs for everybody - fishing, stream exploration and bat counts. And they're for all ages."
Saturday, July 1
• Black Bears of PA -- At 11 a.m., join the Pennsylvania Game Commission for a presentation on black bears. Meet at the Blacksmith Shop at Greenwood Furnace.
Salamander Safari - At 2 p.m., discover where salamanders live, what they eat, what makes them unique and where to find them. Head to Chestnut Springs to catch and identify salamanders. Wear shoes that can get wet. Meet at the Blacksmith Shop at Greenwood Furnace.
Sunday, July 2
Family Fishing - At 10 a.m., join the park naturalist for a morning of fishing. Poles and bait will be provided. No fishing license is required during this program. Meet near the fishing pier at Whipple Dam.
Creek Critters - At 1:30 p.m., find out what lives in Laurel Run through hands-on exploration. Take a short walk to catch and identify water bugs, crayfish and other critters. Wear shoes that can get wet. Meet at boat rental at Whipple Dam.
Monday, July 3
Bat Count - Learn about native bats and then head outdoors to conduct a bat count. Bring a flashlight. Meet at Blacksmith Shop at Greenwood Furnace.
