MIFFLINTOWN -- The Juniata County Commissioners approved the 2023-24 Fiscal Year State Food Purchase Program (SFPP) State Purchase Contract Option Participation Statement, and the 2023 SFPP State Plan of Operation, at Tuesday’s weekly meeting.
Glenda Fultz, Executive Director of the Juniata County Food Pantry, Inc., recommended approval of the program because of the increased need for the pantry in the community.
“Our numbers have been going up. In the last three months, we have seen around 230 families. It had been down to under 200 families. We predicted this with rising food costs and extra SNAP benefits leaving,” Fultz said. “Some people aren’t getting very much in SNAP now, and I think people got used to the added benefits during the pandemic. Now that the extra benefits are gone, combined with the cost of food, we have families needing the food pantry even more.”
