LEWISTOWN -- The Lewistown Borough Council recognized the 100th anniversary of the Juniata Terrace and the heroic actions of Kylie Strawser at its monthly meeting on Wednesday.
Councilman Aaron Wilson congratulated the Terrace and Strawser, head lifeguard, for her quick reaction in saving a young swimmer from drowning at the Community Pool over Memorial Day weekend.
Strawser is a 2023 Mifflin County High School graduate headed to Shippensburg to become a teacher.
Construction for the Terrace began in June 1923. They built the 250 homes for employees of the American Viscose. A commemorative groundbreaking ceremony will be held on Juniata Terrace on Friday, June 23, at 10 a.m.
Also, the Council listened to a resident who asked the Borough to make a section of Spruce Street two-way (currently one-way) between Logan Street and Church Lane. The area was inspected by Borough Manager Kim Zimmerman and DPW to assess the situation. It was determined there was no need to change the current situation, as other roads would achieve the same result.
In other Council news,
• Penelec has a power outage scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon June 20 for Third Street and the West Market area. Penelec will notify affected residents;
• Mayor Deb Bargo expressed her gratitude and appreciation to all EMS teams for their support during a recent house fire on Fifth Street;
• The Council approved hiring three police officers to join the Lewistown Police Department. They will replace the three who recently left the force;
• The Fire Convention will run from Aug. 10-12, with 86 camping spots reserved at Rec Park;
• Approved the Police Academy Incentive Plan;
• Approved a new property insurance carrier with expected savings of close to $20,000.
• The Municipal Hall will be closed on the July 3. The rest of the Borough staff are working unless they take a personal day or vacation;
• The Council postponed the Fifth Street Sliplining ($200,110) until 2024 or 2025 due to budgetary concerns;
* The ordinance for the fireworks is still in effect and being enforced;
• Pool Banners Fundraising: There are 22 sponsors and a Tie-Dye event equaling about $7,585. More pool sponsors are expected; these funds help keep the pool open;
• The County received CDBG funds for fiscal year 2023, with the county keeping 15% for fees, with $123,715 going toward southside paving and ADA ramps this summer;
• Approved the hiring of two for summer support for Streets;
• Approved requested quarterly "open days" for recycling from 8 a.m. to noon. Those days are June 24, Sept. 16, and Dec. 16.
