HUNTINGDON -- With plenty of sun in the forecast for the Memorial Day weekend, this might be the perfect time for some family fishing or a salamander safari at Whipple Dam or Greenwood Furnace state parks.
Both state parks are offering free holiday programs to visitors. Whipple Dam State Park, located along Laurel Run Road in Petersburg, is offering programs on Saturday.
"Families can enjoy the beach, picnics and just getting outdoors during the holiday weekend," Greenwood Furnace State Park Environmental Education Specialist Jen Moore said. "Kids -- and adults – have fun building sandcastles and swimming in the lake."
Join the park naturalist for a morning of fishing as the family fishing program starts at 10 a.m. Poles and bait will be provided, and a fishing license will not be required during this program. Attendees should meet at the fishing pier near the boat lunch.
At 1:30 p.m., the salamander safari gets underway. Attendees can learn about salamanders that live in Pennsylvania: where they live, what they eat, what makes them unique and where to find them.
The program guide will head to Laurel Run to catch and identify salamanders and newts. Those attending are encouraged to wear shoes that can get wet. Meet near the boat rental when arriving.
On Sunday, Greenwood Furnace State Park, along Greenwood Road in Huntingdon, will host both programs. Family fishing is slated for 10 a.m. Attendees should meet near the playground at the beach.
The salamander safari follows at 1:30 p.m. Attendees will head to Standing Stone trail to catch and identify salamanders and newts. Meet at the Blacksmith Shop.
