McVEYTOWN -- On Friday, May 19, 2023, members of the Quilts of Valor Foundation awarded a quilt to McVeytown veteran, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Stanley M. Yorks, USA (Retired).

Yorks enlisted in the National Guard in 1974. He served in the regular Army for 14 years, including a deployment to Iraq in Desert Storm from August 1990 to April 1991. He spent a total of 27 years in the service before retirement in 2003. His many commendations include five Army Achievement Medals, three Overseas Ribbons and a National Defense Medal during his tour in Iraq.

Members of the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF.org) on hand to award the Quilt of Valor were team leader Patricia Egger from Felton, Pa., co-team leader Linda Hackett from Delta, Pa. and volunteer Verna E. Brubaker from Bel Air, Md.

Brubaker met Yorks in McVeytown in 2022. They had a conversation about his military service which ultimately led to Yorks being nominated to receive a Quilt of Valor.

The Quilts of Valor Foundation celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2023. Since its inception, 345,635 Quilts of Valor have been awarded nationwide as of April 30, 2023.
