LEWISTOWN - A $2.8 million highway resurfacing project that will give motorists a smoother ride on more than 12 miles of roads in Mifflin and Juniata counties is scheduled to start next week, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced Wednesday.
The project will include paving of roadways in Lewistown Borough and Granville Township, Mifflin County, and Lack Township, Juniata County.
Construction is expected to begin on Monday, weather permitting, and is expected to be completed by early September.
On Monday, motorists might encounter lane restrictions with reduced traffic on Route 35 in Lack Township, Juniata County, to a single lane. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control.
"Drivers should anticipate short travel delays during daylight hours while work takes place," said PennDOT Safety Press Officer Timothy Nebgen. "PennDOT urges drivers to exercise caution, to be alert for construction vehicles making sudden stops, and not to follow construction vehicles into the closed lane as they deliver material."
Mifflin County roads that will see work as part of this project include:
Big Ridge Road (Route 3004) in Granville Township
Bratton Avenue (Route 3005) in Lewistown Borough and Granville Township
PennDOT will issue an update before the contractor begins work on the Mifflin County roads.
Overall work on this project includes highway resurfacing, drainage improvements, guide rail replacement, pavement marking and miscellaneous construction. The contractor is Grannas Brothers Stone and Asphalt Co. Inc., of Hollidaysburg.
Walnut Street Ramp to Close for Week
Starting Monday, the Walnut Street off-ramp in Lewistown will close as part of the highway resurfacing project in the aone-mile vicinity.
Motorists traveling on Route 322/22 eastbound will continue about half a mile to the East Charles Street exit. Follow East Charles Street (Route 3002), Juniata Street (Route 22) and Market/Valley Street (Route 1005) back to Walnut Street (Route 1017). PennDOT anticipates this detour to be in place until Friday, May 5.
Motorists should plan on extra travel time during this construction work.
Overall work on this project includes pavement and concrete repair, drainage improvements, pavement markings, guide rail replacement and miscellaneous items. HRI Inc., of State College, is the contractor for this $1.1 million project, which PennDOT expects to be completed in late June, depending on the weather.
There might be additional detours during the later stages of the project.
