BURNHAM -- State representative David Rowe (R-Mifflin/Juniata/Snyder/Union) was guest speaker Tuesday at Rotary Club of Lewistown's weekly meeting.
Rowe has represented the Commonwealth's 85th District in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives since winning a special election in September, 2019. He was elected to a third term in November, 2022. The district includes part of Mifflin County consisting of the townships of Decatur and Derry and the borough of Burnham, part of Juniata County consisting of the townships of Fayette and Monroe, all of Snyder County and part of Union County consisting of the townships of East Buffalo and Union.
Originally from Mifflinburg, Rowe was home-schooled, graduating from high school in 2009. After attending National Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan, he spent two years as a Christian missionary educator in southeast Asia. Rowe returned to the U.S. and spent several years as a small business owner before entering public service.
For the current legislative session, Rowe serves on the House Judiciary, Labor and Industry, and Insurance Committees. Due to the change in majority leadership, the legislative process is still in the early stages, but several issues, including a new budget, are at the top of Rowe's list.
"The Governor proposed a 6% increase," Rowe said. "We cannot have expenses exceeding revenues. It's a great proposal but we must be able to pay for what we are spending. We did have a good rainy-day fund, but if we are not putting into that, we are not going to have anything to fall back on."
Rowe is currently working on several proposals, including a veteran-owned small businesses bill that would allow returning veterans an opportunity to create their own businesses, a responsible budget bill that would ensure there are spending limits and spending caps to eliminate structural debt and an education funding bill.
