LEWISTOWN -- The Juniata River Valley Chamber of Commerce Business and Education Committee met Thursday at the Penn State Extension office in Lewistown.
The committee heard updates on several chamber activities including Free-Wheeling Day and Academy Signing Day. Free-Wheeling Day involves local businesses and agencies providing career experience to area fourth-graders. This year's event is scheduled for May 24 at the Youth Park in Reedsville.
"Free-Wheeling Day is an opportunity for elementary-age students to have a real-world hands-on experience with a career and interact with somebody who represents a profession," Penn State Extension Educator and Business and Education Committee Chair, Cher Harpster, said.
Academy Signing Day at the Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology is scheduled for May 17. The event is similar to an athlete's letter of intent signing day with a college or university. The day provides an opportunity for students to sign with employers.
The committee also received updates on two college and career fairs, one each in Mifflin and Juniata counties, that are planned for October. Exact dates have not yet been determined.
The Academy informed the committee of increased enrollment and the addition of an interview process that will benefit students. A Teaching Academy is being added as part of the Early Childhood program and supervisor training begins this summer through partnerships with local businesses.
Updates were provided by Mifflin County School District Guidance departments at the high school, middle school and elementary school levels.
