BEAVERTOWN -- The Snyder County Historical Society will present a program on the 1893 Historic Signature Crazy Quilt on April 16 at 2 p.m.
The crazy quilt, made by the ladies of Adamsburg (now Beaver Springs) Lutheran Church in 1893, contains the names of 1,153 residents, most from Snyder County. Thanks to a collaboration between the Snyder County Historical Society and Midd-West history students, all of the names have been deciphered and cataloged.
In addition to the 1893 Signature Crazy Quilt, another Snyder County Historical Society quilt will also be on display. It was inspired by an earlier quilt in the collection.
Under the direction of Ada Jayne Lepley, 561 names were stitched by the women of the society on 11 panels. The quilt also features an embroidered depiction of the historical society building. Originally, the quilt was won during a raffle. At a later date it was donated back to the society.
A name quilt from Grubbs Lutheran Church made over 100 years ago will also be on display. One of the signed squares is dated April 1875. It is part of the personal collection of Esther Klinger and features her great-great grandparents' signatures.
The program is free to the public and will be held at Beaver Lutheran Church located at 18207 Rte. 522 in Beavertown. Light refreshments to follow the program.
