LEWISTOWN - Students at the Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology in Lewistown will have new technology and other equipment to use, thanks to generous donations from three area businesses.
At the Academy's Operating Committee meeting on March 2, donations for the mechatronics program were accepted from First Quality in Lewistown, which included PLC and interface, touch-screen panels and numerous sensors and switches, worth $60,000; and Philips Ultrasound in Reedsville, which donated pumps, motors, soldering station and a microscope station, worth $63,000.
Weis Markets of Burnham also donated 203 chef jackets and hanging racks to the culinary arts program.
Maintenance repairs
A new water filter system was installed at the Academy on Feb. 27. Additionally, the lead testing samples were taken, and a handwash station was repaired as well as clogs in the sink drain in Medical Science and water cooler drain by the cafeteria.
Maintenance also installed a washer, dryer and hot water heater in the Annex for CNA. They also prepared the building for the open house.
Other Approvals
In other news, the operating committee approved the following retirements:
• Lynn Scarton-Fohringer, culinary arts instructor, at the end of the school year.
• Valerie Woodring Baker, early childhood teacher, at the end of the school year.
• The operating committee approved the resignation of Laura Shay, part-time EMS course coordinator/instructor, effective Feb. 28.
• Members approved the 2023-24 school calendar, with the first student day as Wednesday, Aug. 30 and the last student day as Wednesday, May 31.
• The operating committee approved the following field trips for staff and students:
• Alison Krajewski and medical science students to attend Geisinger School of Nursing on Feb. 21, retroactively.
• Jon Aumiller, Jennifer Jackson and about 48 students to attend Pennsylvania College of Technology on March 22.
• Valerie Woodring Baker and early childhood students to attend Lewistown Elementary School and provide PBIS learning activities on March 23.
• Benjamin Detwiler, Barry King, two chaperones and precision machining students to attend New Holland, Shady Maple and Thaddeus Stevens on March 31.
• Benjamin Detwiler, Barry King, two chaperones and precision machining students to attend Overhead Door Co. of Nittany Valley on April 14.
• Susan Wagner and agriculture students to attend Shaver's Creek Environmental Center and Mifflin County Airport Glider Contest on May 19.
• The operating committee approved a facilities request by Mifflin County 4-H to use the cafeteria on Feb. 28, March 28 and April 25 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. for their 4-H Rabbit Club. About 30 4-H members will be in attendance.
• The operating committee approved a request for Mike McMonigal to attend the Pennsylvania Workforce Development Association from May 3 to 5 at a cost of $1,108.76 to be paid out of adult education.
