BURNHAM -- Looking for a great simple supper? Whip up a hearty and filling soup. It's a dinner option that can really hit the spot on a chilly day or night.
Don't feel like cooking? Darlene Gray and members at the Freedom Avenue United Methodist Church in Burnham can help. The church is selling quarts of homemade soup from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Freedom Avenue UMC Fellowship Hall, 511 E. Freedom Ave.
"We make all the soup," said Darlene Gray, mission chair and adult Sunday school teacher at Freedom Avenue UMC. "It actually takes us about four days. We make a certain kind on one day.
"We prepare all the meat first," she added. "We let it cool and get it ready. Then we package it. The soup comes with a small container of croutons and a small container of mozzarella cheese."
And call it a meal. The church is selling quarts of chicken corn with rivels, ham and bean, beef vegetable, stuffed pepper and French onion for $7 each.
The Freedom Avenue UMC is one of handful of organizations holding upcoming soup sales. The Calvary Church in Lewistown, 111 E. Third St., is serving free soup to the community before the Lewistown Borough Halloween Parade on Wednesday, while the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 E. Logan St., Reedsville, and the McVeytown Masonic Lodge, 25 N. Market St., are holding soup sales on Nov. 4 and 5.
The Freedom Avenue UMC's soup sale is raising money for a new church kitchen as well as the Shining Light Through the Darkness holiday display at Kishacoquillas Park in Lewistown.
Gray said the Freedom Avenue UMC has sold more than 100 quarts to date. Pre-orders are recommended but walk-ins are welcome.
While cooking efforts like the soup sale benefit from a new church kitchen, the entire community can enjoy the Shining Light Through the Darkness holiday display.
Funded by public donations, the church lights up Kish Park's walkways for the holidays and erects displays.
"It can get expensive, replacing light bulbs and lights for the displays," said Gray, who serves as secretary for Shining Light Through the Darkness. "We are putting up some new ones this year, due to donations from the public."
There is nightly entertainment, along with a food stand serving hot dogs and hot chocolate. Homemade cookies are available as well as a train room.
"It's just a nice place to go for the holidays where families can spend time together," Gray said. "People can share God's love at Christmas time with friends and neighbors."
A golf cart is also available for those who can't walk the path. The event runs from Dec. 3 through Jan. 6, 2023. Admission is free. For more information, call (717) 953-6352.

Free soup
The Calvary Church, 111 E. Third St., Lewistown will serve free soup from 5 to 6 p.m. -- or until it's gone -- prior to the Lewistown Borough Halloween Parade on Wednesday. From 6 to 8:30 p.m. the church will offer coffee, hot chocolate and other treats.
Beef vegetable soup sale
The Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 E. Logan St., Reedsville, is holding a beef vegetable soup sale from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 4. Quarts cost $7, with pre-orders recommended. For more information, call (717) 667-6312.

The McVeytown Masonic Lodge, 25 N. Market St., McVeytown, is having a soup and bake sale starting at 11:30 a.m., November 5. Kettle cooked ham and bean and chicken corn soups are available. Quarts cost $7, with pre-orders recommended by Nov. 1. For more information, call (717) 363-3201.
