Fundraiser supports Juniata’s post-prom event

MIFFLINTOWN -- Kathy Whitesel doesn't consider herself to be a lucky duck -- but she wouldn't mind winning 500 bucks.
"I support a lot of drawings ... I don't win them, but I do support them," the Mifflintown woman said.
Whitesel attended a Juniata Indians girls soccer game recently when she spotted Tawny Mummah, vice president of the Juniata High School Junior Parents Association, manning a raffle table.
"I know her, so I went over to see what she was selling," Whitesel recalled. "Years ago, when I volunteered with the United Way, they floated ducks, so I was happy to support the cause."
Even if Whitesel doesn't win, she knows the $10 donation she made to buy a numbered rubber duck for the upcoming Rubber Duck Race that will benefit Juniata High School's 2023 After Prom party.
Whitesel knows the proceeds go to a good cause.
"I got lucky No. 83," she said jokingly. "If that's the winning duck, it will look great."
Mummah appreciated the support from a friend.
"The After Prom is pretty expensive," Mummah said. "When I moved to the area, I heard about an organization in Lewistown doing this. When we were looking for ideas to fundraise, we thought we would try it."
The parents association hopes to sell 200 numbered rubber ducks for the race event, which is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at Lions Club Park in Port Royal.
The numbered rubber ducks that are sold will be dumped into a stream, with the first duck to reach the finish line being declared the winner. Duck owners do not need to be present to win as the winner will be notified by phone.
Mummah said about 150 rubber ducks have been sold to date. Reaching their goal would raise about $1,500 for the After Prom and could mean the winning duck would bank $500 for its owner.
"The main thing is to keep them safe after prom," Mummah said of students attending the After Prom party. "We want the kids to be there. We want to give away good prizes and have good food. But to have all these good things to offer the students can get expensive."
Overall, the parents association hopes to raise $18,000 for the After Prom party.
