Larry and Darlene Engle bid goodbye to greenhouse

MIDDLEBURG -- In November 2021, with heavy hearts Larry and Darlene Engle announced that they had sold Engle's Farm & Greenhouses located at 171 Greenhouse Road in Middleburg.
"We want to thank all our customers for a successful 50 years of growing our business. We also celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary this year which makes it a milestone for both our life and business," said the Engles.
For nearly 50 years, Larry and Darlene Engle have welcomed customers to their business. Customers have traveled from near and far for the quality products and wide selection of plants and vegetable. The business first started out growing seedless watermelons and cantaloupes. In 1974, they had a farm market for our fresh fruit and vegetables. In 1983, Engle's became a Pa. Certified Farm Market.
"Customers then started asking for our plants," explained Darlene. "That was the start of selling flower and vegetable plants. With the help of our loyal employees, some who have been here for nearly 30 years, we steadily grew into 60,000 sq. ft. and 16 greenhouses. We have grown annuals, vegetable, herbs, a very large selection of perennials, and we're known for our starter perennials of over 200 varieties." Engle's Farm and Greenhouses can truly claim that their products are locally grown.
Then Darlene added, "We were one of the first greenhouses in the area to sell Proven Winner plants. Now, the plant is recognized by its trademark."
Larry and Darlene didn't mind the many long days in the greenhouse. They both wanted to grow a beautiful crop for their customers in the spring.
What is the secret to the success of Engle's Greenhouse? Darlene quickly credits Larry's passion for growing quality plants. "The plants started as a seed, unrooted cutting, or plug. Larry diligently watered and fertilized them. He had his schedule when to do certain things for the plants."
Darlene has always strived to provide the best customer service and best customer experience. "Our customers have been like friends to us. We are proud to say we have had many 3 generation families come to the greenhouse: grandparents, parents, and now adult children!"
Over the years, Larry and Darlene Engle have had many loyal customers. "One customer told us when she heard we were selling our business that we were the 'Corner Stone of Middleburg'. Other customers call Engle's Greenhouse their 'Happy Place'."
"We just want to say again, thank you and how special our customers and employees were to the success of our business," said Larry and Darlene Engle with heartfelt gratitude.
Engle's Farm & Greenhouses is under new ownership. Ben Lizardi from Beavertown is the new owner. The new name is Engle's Farm & Greenhouse LLC. Most of the employees will continue working for Ben, so customers will see many familiar faces.
