3 proclamations issued
Commissioners declare several awareness weeks

LEWISTOWN – During their regular business meeting Thursday the MIfflin County commissioners issued three different proclamations. The first proclaimed May as Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month. Patriot Riders chapter president Stan Peterson was present to accept the proclamation. Peterson said the group promotes motorcycle safety and has a program called Operation Save a Life that they present to schools and clubs. The group is also holding their annual bike giveaway to promote motorcycle safety on June 12th at the Mifflin County Youth Park.
The second proclamation issued was declaring May 2nd through May 8th as National Travel and Tourism Week in Mifflin County. Executive director of the Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau Jenny Landis was on hand to accept the proclamation. "Travel is a big, big economic mover here in Mifflin County as well as Juniata County." Landis said, "All year long we work to tell people outside this area what we have here to celebrate and to come and visit." This year the bureau created postcards that they are offering for free. Anyone wishing to mail a postcard to someone may send the visitors bureau an email containing what you want written on the postcard and the address of the person you wish to send it to. The bureau will fill out and mail the postcard for you at no cost. "We created these postcards as a way for you to invite more people in. To come see us and come enjoy our good nature." Landis said.
The third and final proclamation of the day was issued to proclaim May 9th through May 15th as National Prevention Week. A representative from Mifflin County Communities That Care was present to accept the proclamation. For prevention week the organization did a Prevention Happens Here campaign in the area. The organization created a video which will be featured on the Commonwealth Prevention Alliance website next week. Some current preventative initiatives by the CTC deal with mental health, vaping and alcohol and marijuana use with youth in the county.
Also during the meeting the commissioners also took the following action.
¯Approved the request for exoneration of 2021 county real estate tax bill and relieve the Tax Collector from collecting this bill parcel No. 21,10-0122A,053 located in Wayne Township - shed was removed – $2.37
¯Approved to Amend the action taken on April 15, 2021 to exonerate Union Township Tax Collector Herb Zook from collecting 2021 per capita tax bills as presented (38) - corrected total 37
¯Awarded notification for the 2020/2021 Probation Grant-In-Aid for the period July 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021 – $21,841.00
¯Approved the four-year Contract Renewal and Recertification with Eagle Towing and Recovery, Inc., for the Haz-mat Team
¯Approved resolution No. 4 of 2021 on behalf of the Brown Township Supervisors approving budget revisions to the FFY 2018 CDBG Program
