MIFFLINTOWN -- Laurie S. Hower has announced her candidacy for Juniata County treasurer on the Republican ticket.
Hower is a lifelong resident of Juniata County and the daughter of the late Jay H. Thompson and the late Erma P. Richardson of Port Royal. She has been married to Timothy Hower for almost 34 years and they have two grown children, Michael Hower of Mifflintown and Vanessa Harris of Halsey, Oregon. Hower calls herself a "proud grandma" to 3-year-old Ava and 1-month-old Ivy.
Hower has 18 years of banking experience at the First National Bank of Mifflintown (now Pennian Bank), where she served as computer operator, bookkeeper, teller, floating teller and assisted as accounting clerk and CD clerk as needed. While at the bank, she took several courses through the American Banking Association, including accounting principles.
Hower has 30 years of experience in bookkeeping for several local businesses and non-profit organizations and seven years of experience in insurance billing. She served two years as auditor for Port Royal Borough.
She operated a small business for seven years which included bookkeeping services, consulting and problem solving in Quickbooks, and insurance billing for ambulance and dental offices. She oversaw the installation of a computer network at Dr. William Crim's office as well as the upgrade from manual billing to dental office and billing software. Other services included income tax preparation for several clients.
Hower previously worked as traffic director at Starview Media Inc. (WJUN-FM, WLZS-FM and WYOK-AM York) and she has been a notary public since 2007. She is currently employed by Century 21 Above and Beyond in Mifflintown as an administrative assistant and bookkeeper.
She is a member of the Republican Women of Juniata County and she attends Cedar Grove Brethren in Christ Church. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, watching movies and traveling to Williamsburg, Virginia and to Oregon to visit her daughter and her family.
The primary election is May 18.
